Same problem as already listed auto upgraded to latest version few days ago and ever since my pc running premium has been extremely slow often crashing chrome and avast itself constantly running at 100% cpu usage (avast services 35% and avast installer 37%) and slowly increasing memory usage until it hits 90+% and just stops responding shortly after.
did a full uninstall and reinstall and every thing seems to be back to normal.
I have withdrawn the comment. I overlooked an important factor, Power Options, which invalidated what I wrote.
The variables created by changing the power options just before installing Avast 20.7 were sufficient to affect the perceived effects as displayed in Task Manager of updating from Avast 20.6 to 20.7. I am now satisified that Avast 20.7 works well and I changed this comment as soon as I was aware of my error so as not to offer confusing information to others.
Those several AvastUI.exe processes are in demand paged virtual memory so if they not executing then the RAM that was allocated to them will be reallocated to other processes as required. If they become active again then they can be paged back into RAM.
I congratulate all those who work to develop antivirus software that is beginning to be the negation of a simple antivirus.
We move from the hidden and no longer accessible settings, to the geek: area (even for an operation such as deleting the scan history which should be easily accessible right in the Settings interface) and now to the transfer of almost all the Settings in the System Registry Windows https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=237546.0 and this to the delight of average users who have already lined up to attend the Faculty of Computer Science and then use this antivirus correctly and do no damage to the Windows Registry.
We are not talking about the numerous flaws that are found with each subsequent update.
Despite being in possession of a Premium license and still having about 7 months available before the next possible renewal, I decided to uninstall the software some time ago.
I will eventually return to install it only if they will make available to users a light version (so perhaps never), which does its job with dignity, without the “complications” and “trappings” added from time to time and which gives us back software such as the one I used for many years (and this despite having good technological and IT knowledge).
Hi, TBH, I never was (and probably never will be) a fan of the Omni design/style. Just for the record.
Nevertheless, I think it’s good to give users a choice (like the skins we had in the good old days of v4.x).
The whole UI needs a complete rework, with a view to usability, in its current form it isn’t intuitive and putting lipstick on a pig (as they say) is still a pig. The size of this UI is still massive (with acres of empty space) and make no concession to a users screen resolution and allow it to be resized and or repositioned and stay where it was when reopened.
The whole geek:area is a completely undocumented hidden area, what are Avast afraid of, give a warning that changing settings can impact security, etc. Even you get into the hidden area, it a single level and scrolling like there is no end to find settings, very poor.
Like Asyn, I loved the old style 4.x skins UI, Zero chance of that happening but allow the user to resize and reposition to suit their systems and use.
Avast need to invest in human factors to focus on usability intuitiveness of the UI. Not paint over rust. The software quality mantra “get it right first time than struggle to fix it in service” is always in my thoughts. That means at the design stage, prior to any coding and testing.
Users here on the forum were at one time asked to nominate “old settings” for consideration to be kept alive. It is sad that we continue to see posts begging for a setting that is no longer present or supported, even in the ill conceived “geek-area”.
Avast has historically itchy fingers when it come to the UI. Change for change’s sake seems to be the mantra. The difficulties of non-technical Avast users are aggravated by the movable feast which is its UI design. At the moment, we Avast users are in a good place and things seem reasonably stable but another UI tremor is probably only round the corner.
I am pleased with the considerably reduced nagging messages about the adverse effects on security and privacy by the lack of premium features.
I have used Avast for more than 15 years and would not use any other anti-malware software (I have occasionally strayed from the Avast path but have always returned after a brief interlude). However, I would always augment Avast with Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit and NoVirusThanks OSArmor. This combination is very trouble free.
Avast Password Manager Stopped working in this new version. It shows that it is active but no extensions ae showing in Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox.
