For some reason Avast free antivirus is not working properly for me. Restart or shutdown takes a long time and often avastui.exe has to be ended manually. Version 23.2 works fine but 23.3 and 23.4 did not. I tried clean reinstall but it doesn’t help… revert to 23.2 Win10x64 22H2.
Avast will not update to new program. Has been like this for close to a month now. Sits there, spins, says, “Installing application update…”, then says in red, “Something went wrong, and the update failed. Please try again.”, then below that, “Release date was March 31, 2023 at 04:14pm (ver.23.3.6058-build 23.3.8047.782)”. Any idea on how to repair? I have used “change” to unclick, then re-click all options in Windows Control Panel, Programs. Have used “reset” (or “repair”? selection) within Avast SW application. Still getting the same failure to install. Just spins and does nothing else.
I updated to the new version today and wish I hadn’t. Nothing opens. I can’t open photo’s. I’m going to look for more antivirus software and uninstall Avast.
EDIT:
I did find a better one but haven’t downloaded it yet. I have to pay for 3 years but that’s no problem. No one on here has tried to help me.
There was no clarity, details, error messages, etc. so it is almost impossible to help.
However, we have been trying to help ‘midnight’ for many things over many years that have effected her installation of Avast and we are none the wiser to her system setup, OS version, build and components, etc. or Avast installation, components. This is the main reason why I use my Forum Signature to show my OS, system and Avast settings and some other elements. That way I don’t have to constantly give my details.
To say that she can’t view photos is pretty broad, with no photo file type it is impossible to say or even investigate.
My photos are normally saved to JPG file format, as JPG files are usually smaller file size and because that makes it easier to share/send the file. I save my screenshots to PNG file format as they are easier viewed and supported, especially on line.
I mention all of this because when browsing the Internet it is common to see these file formats for the images/screenshots/photos on screen. If ‘midnight’ can’t view any photo format, lost of websites would have the same problem (unable to view) images/screenshots/photos.
All of which makes it just as hard to help, nothing about the specific problem, we ask specific questions to try and help, none of which were answered.
What’s with all of the blank lines in your post ?
No idea what you edited in the post, 2 minutes after post.
You said in your original post that you can’t view photos, this is pretty broad, what photo file type are you having problems with ?
What program are you using to view these photos ?
What errors are you getting when trying to open the photos (if any error displayed) ?
It is impossible to say or even investigate without detailed information.
For example - My photos are normally saved to JPG file format, as JPG files are usually smaller file size and because that makes it easier to share/send the file. I save my screenshots to PNG file format as they are easier viewed and supported, especially on line.

I don’t know what you are using for a browser, EDIT there are 30 blank lines in your previous post, see attached image.
Worse still you don’t answer any of the questions, if you can’t do that I don’t know why you ever ask for help as it is impossible when we have nothing to work with.
There are times when it is impossible to get an answer to even try and help!
