new avast window too big for laptop screen

After the recent avast update the avast window doesn’t fit. It is so large the bottom buttons are off the bottom of the laptop screen rendering it useless. Dragging the window up doesn’t help as it snaps back into place immediately. Tell me there is a bug fix on the way.

I am having the same problem, only mine is not a laptop but a regular computer monitor (a 20-inch widescreen). There’s something cut off at the bottom, but I don’t know how much. When I right-click on the icon and open that, the window size is okay. But when I left click on the icon to open that window (for scanning, etc). that’s the window that’s too big. (Rick, did the icon in the task bar change for you?)

I have the avast icon on the desktop and don’t pay much attention to the tiny taskbar icon, but I guess it does look a little different. Why do you ask?

The task bar icon just changed today when I rebooted my computer for some other reason, that and how really long it takes for the UI to load. After reading around here, it seems that the update to 17.2.2288 occurred last week (?), so just wondering why things are changing for me today.

Oh, and I normally do not have the program set to automatically update, which of course then that surprised me when it apparently did auto update today. So I checked and it was set to auto update instead of the “Ask When an update is available” which is where I always have it set. (I have virus updates sent to auto, of course, but not the program updates.) Some of my desktop icons were also moved around. Weird.

With in excess of 200 million users they can’t all get the update at the same time, so the update cycle is spread over a period of time.

Some time ago the Program Update was set to Automatic, You can however change the setting back to Ask (notify you) and that change should be remembered and honoured.

I have it set to 125%. Was the screen height set to 764 pixels before the update? It wasn’t a problem before that update. Is there a way to change size that I’m missing? I am a lowly free edition user BTW.

For me on a 26" 1920X1200 resolution screen the UI is 1010X674, but my Windows XP Pro monitor display setting is 96 dpi (Normal).

So there will be some variations on the UI size depending on screen resolution and windows display settings.

My screen resolution is 1600X900 / 140%. I don’t have issues with anything else other than this UI window, and I never had a problem with the UI until this last update.

The problem always seems to arise when anything over 100% is selected.
1600X900 / 100% should work without problems
(Unless the screen resolutions are as small as they are on a Dell Miniu. )

Ordinarily that would have been correct, but when the decision was made to go Auto Program Update, I think that it would have been set that way to start with as the default. Since then I have set mine to Ask and that is pretty much what has happened. Whilst on this XP system I update relatively early when I know (from the forums) that a new update has been released.

My win10 laptop I still have avast free 12.3.2280 (and the old UI size is much better) and that was set to Ask, it is still set that way and when I check the about avast, it shows an update is available.

As bob mentioned having the windows set as 140% it is likely to be too big. Certainly on my win10 laptop 1920X1080 the default (recommendation) is 125% - give that a try - and see if it is workable for both your eyes and the avastUI.

For the most part if your main use is browsing, most browsers allow for quick and easy increase in text size. Just click the Ctrl key and the + key together to increase text size and Ctrl key and the - key together to decrease text size.

I do a nice amount of Internet research related to my work, although most of it is typing. I tried the 125% and it does work for the IU…thanks! But I don’t like it otherwise. I prefer my desk icons to be larger, for one thing, and the 140% is just overall easier on my old eyes for all the work I do on the computer. But after looking at the full IU screen at 125, I now know that I’m not really missing all that much at the bottom of the screen at 140!

On my XP system I don’t have any desktop icons, I use a dock (RocketDock) and I put my commonly used programs and locations on that.

Interestingly on my win7 netbook 10.1" screen (1024X600) and that is only set at 100%, I also use a dock (ObjectDock) on that as well, no desktop icons. Both of these docks have medium sized icons, but expand when you hover over them and display the program name in large text.

Where there’s a will there is a way, but it makes no sense to have to change your settings around just to accommodate a massive UI, which has acres of wasted empty space.

I was just getting ready to say the same thing as David. If everything else I do on the computer…and I mean everything I do…works great with my settings now, great for eyes, it makes no sense to change that just for this UI.

Well avast are working on (what I consider the complex option) a system where the UI will be sized according to your resolution. I say complex as first it has to confirm your resolution and size the UI accordingly. Then there is also users personal percentage % to consider in this equation and arrive at a UI size to fit both of these settings.

Me I have always said the best option is to allow the UI to be resizeable by the user, much less complex (I think) and the user can resize it according to their use, but there is massive (there’s that word again) resistance to have the UI resizeable.

I just wanted to ring in on this issue. I just had an elderly customer come in - he has everything on his computer set to large as well. Installed Avast and could not see or access proper buttons to work with Avast - I had to temporarily change customers resolution to complete the installation. Then decided it’ll never work properly on his computer and removed Avast - I installed another AV which was better suited for his display settings.

It’s too bad there isn’t a resizable option like Dave mentioned. Hopefully there will be a solution - my elderly customers often have their displays set to large print/icons and this will be a problem.
