I`m glad to announce that new beta version is ready - 20.1.2397 (build 20.1.5069).
What was fixed
Fixed crash in network stream filter
Fixed crash in browser cleanup
Fixed problem with logs not correctly rotating (logs had hundreds of MB in some cases)
Fixed issues in Smart scan that performance scan does not find any problems
Fixed issue with stuck Smart scan
Fixed problem with crashing Behavior Shield, during running RanSim test
THe ‘Smart Scan’ is still not functioning properly and hasn’t for me for well over a year.
I realize this issue has been reported in the past and for me still hasn’t been resolved.
I have ignored this issue as I don’t run the ‘Smart Scan’ normally, however do check after every update only to find there is still this BUG that shows the scan completed (with both categories “malware and Advanced” checked green at top of UI however still scanning malware at 0% and then freezes.
Yes most of the time you can stop scan, start it again and sometimes will progress appropriately) with first Malware completing with a check and then Advanced completing with a check.
But sometimes as like today just freezes and doesn’t respond when you click
“STOP SCAN”.
This has been this way for a long time

Whilst I’m not involved in this beta testing session and you obviously need to test everything.
For me I simply don’t run the (NOT so) Smart Scan as I feel it is more a vehicle to sell the other paid options. I say NOT so Smart as what it flags is down right dumb, for instance I’m vulnerable to ransomware, indicating folders that are Windows default locations (which are empty) I don’t use defaults.
And also my IP address is visible, who cares, I don’t. What annoys me more is the appearance that it is looking over my shoulder. I thought Avast would have learnt something from the data selling bloody nose, anonymised or otherwise. Avast is in the privileged position of being installed on my system/s it shouldn’t be using that to snoop on what I’m doing to try and sell me something, which I won’t do because of the way it is offered.
Hi David
Yup, I get that. Very annoying
I have a paid version and don’t get those nagging scan results.
I’m basically talking about the (improper)scanning itself not the shown results.
But no big deal, just reporting it. As I said I don’t regularily run Smart Scan.
In the past I’ve performed a ‘Repair’ and seems to resolve the issue for only a short while
The free version suits my needs, so I just ignore these stupid and at times scaremongering ads. Give the user a headache and sell them an aspirin ads just don’t work, certainly not for me
Fix for Behavior Shield: I am very pleased since that must mean that Behavior Shield is even more robust than previously. Roll-on the release of Avast 20.
Now for an irrelevant aside: A competitor of Avast which boasts of being exceedingly light on resources is nothing of the sort. I tried what turns out to be a behemoth with a very bloated working set and which is a big drag on performance. I uninstalled it and reinstalled Avast and the performance comparison in favour of Avast was stark. Avast is incedibly light on memory and has a negligible impact on subjectively perceived performance to the extent that the system is no quicker when Avast is not installed. AV-comparatives informs that Avast is extremely effective in doing what it is designed to do.
For all my carping about ‘alerts’, Avast cannot be bettered IMHO.
Same issues with loss of internet connection. It 's doing funny things when avast premium AV is installed. Based on a regular network check there is an issue with DNS
I can share a log from Avast but the outcome is very simple. Internet connection is okay with a default Win 10 settings. When Avast Firewall takes control during installation everything crashes… no internet and crazy things with a network. WiFi sign at the bottom of the screen sometimes shows that internet is on but then goes to offline mode.
Troubleshooter helped once to restore connection for a few seconds. Then it crashed again.
Just wondering does it really matter where I am based now? I mean perhaps there is something special with Internet provide settings. I’m definetly not an expert but this is my 3rd attempt to install the software and it doesn’t work. Just sad
This was my first installation of a Beta Avast. I installed by first disabling all shields and that went OK. On restarting however two shields would not operate so I ran the Avast uninstall tool in safe mode and that enabled a problem free restart. Apart from that, I regret that the ‘Old Settings’ feature is no longer available so the entries in the old Troubleshooting were not availlable to see if the features listed within were enabled or not. Are the anti-rootkit monitor, the anti-exploit module and the rootkit scan on system startup still operational? Also the old General settings for ‘scan for potentially for unwanted programs (PUPs)’ was not visible.
Otherwise the Beta seemd to work properly. I believe that it is important to be consistent with the settings dialogs. The ‘Old Settings’ were good because they were concisely presented and so assimilatable at a glance (or only a few glances at any rate).
