New build of avast (5.0.462) now officially released

Mr. Lucky - yet again no problems - win 7 64 bit ;D

Updated since version .418 without any problems

Windows XP SP 3

My update went smooth as butter here…and that’s smooth… :o 8)

Yep my update also went just fine and dandy with windows 7 build

Got the “ask” popup notification right after first coming online today, shortly after noon Eastern time, and the update went just fine.

Slightly off-topic, and strictly out of curiosity … anyone know if the order in which that notification goes out to users, on that 7-day server-cycle thing, is newly randomized with each new upgrade, or is it more or less constant? I seem to consistently get the notification quite early after a new version’s release.

  1. the cycle is now set to 12 hours as opposed to 7 days (it’s controlled by the servers and can be changed at any time). So no later than 12 hours after the update is released (i.e. in ~4 hours from now), everyone should get at least one popup.

  2. the order is machine-fixed (not random-generated for each update).

Thanks, Vlk. So that means everyone’s getting them faster now, not that I’ve got some kind of “in”.

I’m happy to report that the right click on the task bar tab for the avast UI now gives the usual context menu option/s to Close.

That is good news, though have the 100 million users moved from 4.8 yet, presumably not (or the servers would be under heavy load) ?

Or is this 12 hour update cycle for current 5.0 users ?

Thanks for the response. I understand the 12 hour notification thanks to you. I have to ask then, if I haven’t gotten the update notification, how is it that the update is there when I click Program update?

Yes it was previously 7 days but as Vlk said there is now a process which can vary that cycle duration

The fact you haven’t been notified doesn’t mean there is no update, just that ‘you haven’t yet been notified.’ The update cycling process is effectively the ‘notification’ since Program Updates are set to Ask once you are in the current cycle of an update being available.

There has never been anything to block a manual program update attempt. With exception to those on 4.8 if they checked there would be no update path through the UI to 5.0, so if they did a manual check they would find the 4.8 version they have is the latest 4.8 version.

Thanks for the heads up. The update was flawless by the way. (again)

Got asked for update my avast! Updated from 418 > 462 = Great and no slow at all. ;D

Good job ALWIL. I thought you wont success but still you did !!! We need to make you a light.

Updated to 5.0.462 today and my internet speed has dropped again :-\ I posted a question back in Sept last year asking if Avast and MSE were working together and received this response

Have a read:
Greetings from Redmond
http://blog.avast.com/2009/08/28/greetings-from-redmond

My question now is why when I only have MSE installed my d/l speed is 50mb, but when I have .462 installed my speed drops to 34mb ? Is the liason between Redmond and Avast still working ? My ISP is Virgin and I have the 50mb cable

Thanks for fixing Update Parameters. Nice work!

Couldn’t wait… updated from 418 to 462 using the Avast app. No problems (so far), net speed
the same (10+mb), ping 23ms. Great job Alwil… keep up the quality work.

Seems that I asked an awkward question again and am being ignored. My conclusion is that the MSE developers have moved on and left Avast to muddle on by themselves

My Avast 5.0.418 was aware of the update this morning, as shown on the Summary page. I had to go away so I turned the machine off. When I arrived home and started the machine, I got the popup notification with the update button. From one of your previous posts in another thread about being able to update logged in as a limited Windows user, I clicked on the update. All went well, and Avast asked for restart of windows. Very clean setup, indeed.

Congratulations to the programmers and the rest of the Avast team.

Vlk, congratulations on you new son. Big responsibility with tons of satisfaction watching him grow. 8)

Just updated from 454 on both machines, no problem. 8)

at 50mb - all the quicker the virus bite you (50Mbps I presume)

I dont think yr problem is with MSE and avast, but rather wit something else and avast.
Do you have any other antivirus other than MSE (anti-malware) and avast on yr computer?
what is yr firewall?

There may now be conflicts wit MSE and avast but there has been no reports as far as I know. Can you run avast witout MSE and see what gives? You may have genuine conflict wit avast and something else on yr computer.

and on other hand, MSE is just too lightweight to run that by itself.
