New Computer--Can't get Pegasus Mail to access internet

I have the Avast Mail shield on, and my new version of Pegasus Mail can’t access my ISP. I have dial-up. I recall from my old computer that Avast puts a proxy in, I think. It doesn’t show up in Pegasus Mail. Instead I get an error message which makes no sense to me. I don’t know if it is claiming that Avast is blocking access to my mail server–both POP and STMP.

Here is the error message:
[*] Connection established to 216.77.188.41

0089 421 Cannot connect to SMTP server 216.77.188.41 (216.77.188.41:25), connect error 10060
<< 0022 EHLO [12.74.242.163]

Is this a problem with my ISP or with the Avast Mail shield? If it is Avast, how do I fix it? XP Pro with Pegasus mail has always worked for me in the past.

Forgot to mention that I downloaded the most recent version of Avast Free home today on this new computer. I have 5.0.507 with the latest virus definitions.

The new interface is hard for me. I was so used to the old one and have used it for many years.

I have no problems using Pegasus 4.52 with the latest version of Avast, XP SP3. But I don’t use the mail shield - I use the Pegasus VirScan extension to scan mail attachments and that works fine with Avast 5. You should try turning off the Mail Shield to see if that solves your problem, but from what you say I suspect it is an error in how you have configured your email servers in Pegasus on that new computer.

I’m also using Pegasus Mail v4.52. I have the Avast Mail Shield disabled. In all the years of using Pegasus Mail, a few times I have received a infected message. Whenever attempting to save or view an attachment in Pegasus Mail, the attachment is created as a file in TEMP folder. If it is infected, any resident antivirus program that I was using at the time alerted immediately if it was capable of detecting it at all. If the antivirus program can’t detect it, then scanning the message wouldn’t find it either. I’ve never been infected in all these years.
