New Computer

I am getting a new computer within the next two weeks. I will have Windows XP instead of Windows 98se. I want to continue with avast but am not sure how to continue. I have had no problems with avast, but there is a concern which I want to correct
When I tried to get my registration # with avast the first time, it would not come into my regular email address. I then read somewhere that I should try an alternate address. I then put my hotmail address in and the # came. I did email the support for a small problem, but again I had to use my hotmail address as I received no answer from them to my regular address. When I get my new computer I want to be sure I can use my regular email address and not have to go through Hotmail.
I am wanting to know what to do when the new computer comes. Should I just start all over? Getting the anti virus protection will be my first concern and I want to make sure I am prepared.

Hi Emma,

Please make your FIRST concern with the new pc and WinXp, Windows Updates. Please go there and download any and all security related downloads into your pc that Wins Updates may tell you that your machine needs. Otherwise if you don’t your pc will be very vulnerable to the new latest infections that will probably have a bad effect on your new machine.
Make getting your anti-virus protection (hopefully Avast) your second priority. Make sure the built in WinXp Firewall is enabled.
As far as getting your registration number e-mailed to you I suggest you use which ever e-mail program that will allow you to
receive this number.

I’ve actually noticed this too, or atleast I had to send it twice to the same email account a couple of times. I’m not sure why though, although if you have to hotmail should be totally safe.

Good luck and tell us how it turns out!

Thank you for the replies. It is not everyday one gets a new computer. I want to do everything right this time. A folder for everthing and everything in its folder.
I will definitely do the updates, patches etc. Then will reregister again with avast and let the # come where it may. I really don’t like using Hotmail. I try to keep everything simple.
I wish everyone’s problems here were as simple as mine.
I do know where to come when I have a difficult one.

Hello Emma,

It's radicalb21. First let me welcome you to the forum. One piece of advice I have for you is before you put your new computer online is to download the following patches from microsoft website for Windows XP. Here are links to the security bulletins from microsoft:

817778:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;817778

826939:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;826939

832894:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS04-004.mspx

835732:

840374:

If some of these patches aren’t applied before going on line you can be affected by various viruses, worms, and trojans because your system isn’t up to date. I hope this helps. If you have questions please feel free to email me or IM me through my profile or via my website www.v1ru5help.org .

Thank you, Radical, for this advise and the security steps mentioned on your web site.
I will do the updates before I send even one little joke or even go to the avast forums.
If I go to the Windows Update page and have my new computer scanned will it not give me all the necessary updates etc. for XP, IE and OE ?

It seems any more instead of
"Wishin’ and hopin’ and thinkin’ and prayin’ "
for my dreams
I am
" ‘fraggin’ and scannin’ and patchin’ and prayin’ "
to get rid of my nightmares

Would you believe that in my gray haired computer clique I am actually known as the expert on some things? A bit hard to imagine I am sure  but when we all help each other, we then can enjoy the computer.

I appreciate all suggestions.

 Lucky you…about the new system, mine is an old p3 500 mhz anyways. I agree with the rest. I get my Reg # with my regular email address, and you can get this as many times as you need too.

Either address should work with no problems it might take some time to get to your system by email server backlog.

btw welcome aboard.

Enjoy your new winxp system I’m sure you’ll love it.

can’t you use the same code you got for the last version of avast you had. if you saved it i mean.

emma - as long as a year has not past since you first got your registration number, you should still be able to use the same number after you have downloaded avast! onto the new computer.

Previded, as netviokid said, you save it from the old computer. Write it down somewhere.

I tried to use my same key when reinstalling and it told me it wasn’t valid.
