New Error with Outlook/Excahnge Provider

Basically today I started to get this error when I recieve n emailnto Outlook 2007 B2. Sorry for the long post but I wanted to be detailed. Basically today I just started to get this error when I receive email into Outlook 2007 B2. Then it seems that if I switch to any other email that is already in my mailbox, I get the same message. Below is the error message box.

Message Box:
avast!: Cannot scan the mesage body,
Error code is 80040605

Error 0x80040605
OK

In the application event log I see the following error as well.

Any ideas? I also noticed that this happened after the defs updated this evening. I tried a complete uninstall and reinstalled the app as well. Same thing keeps popping up. Once I either stop or pause the outlook/exchange provider this error also stops.

Just incase anyone asks. I am running avast build 4.7.892, and my VPS file version is 0643-6 dated today (10/26/2006).

Is this a tablet PC? Or WinXP with Tablet support?

Also, the event log entry indicates that it was a crash in ashSimpl.exe (the main avast on-demand scanner executable) while you’re talking about problems with Outlook. Are you sure the log entry really corresponds to the Outlook crash?

Thanks
Vlk

Vlk…

This is a Tablet PC 2005 Edition with SP2 to be exact.

Regarding the event log message… Aparently I was incorrect with… I just tested this, I cleared my event logs about 5 hours and rebooted the system. I also turned off the outlook provider. No errors so far. I then tested this by turning on the provider. Sent myself an email (FYI while in doing this test after I turned back on the provider I got the “your virus database has been updated” message) I got the same error popup message, however no event log message. VPS file is now 0643-7.

Thoughts?

BTW is this Office 2K7 B2 or B2TR?

Thanks
Vlk

Office 2007 B2TR.

Just something else to throw out there I also deleted and then recreated my outlook profile (Excahnge 2003), to see if this might correct the issue. I was perhaps thinking it had to deal with “Cached Excahnge Mode”. After my new profile has been created I got the same error.

OK after doing a complete uninstall again, searching through my registry, and clearing anything that had avast or alwil in it. I reinstalled the application again and the same error pops up. I am running out of ideas, and I really do not want to keep this provider off. But I am not understanding what or why this error all of a suddend happening. Once again below is the error when ever a new email comes into my outlook’s excahnge mailbox.

Message Box Title: Error

Message:
avast!: Cannot scan the mesage body,
Error code is 80040605

Error 0x80040605

Button: OK

The error code means “MAPI Not Initialized”. It seems that avast somehow cannot access the messages - but the error code is quite strange…

Rather than reinstalling avast, I think it could help to reinstall Office. Although I understand that it’s a bit of pain in the a$$…

I will give it a shot and see what happens.

OK here is what I have done… (Currently I do not have my Office installation disks until another 6 hours from now.) I did a full repair of Office 2007 b2tr. I removed my outlook profile once again. This time I also removed my ost and dat files from C:\Documents and Settings\profile\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook. I recreated my profile once again. It seemed as if things were working with the new profile at first. Emails seemed to be filling my inbox, then… Message Popup. Once I clicked on any of these messages I would then get the message popup. Also I noticed the exchange profiler icon sit in the system tray until I clicked on the ok button.

Clearly something is wrong, but what exactly, and how to correct it is becoming a p.i.t.a.

I got the same error popping up (error 80040605) when I opened email messages.

I have WinXP Pro, and it started happening in Outlook after I successfully upgraded Office 2003 to Office 2007. I have Avast 4.7.652 running in Netclient mode in my domain.

I was able to fix it by running the netclient install again, uninstalling the Outlook/Exchange feature, restart, than running the netclient install again and putting the Outlook/Exchange feature back in.

After that, it worked fine for me. Maybe if you did the same thing with Home/Pro, it would solve it. (I thought I’d post this for continuity’s sake…)

Howdy,

Since my issue is sorta related, I’ll pass it on:

We had a mailbox opened on 2 clients running Outlook 2003 and 2007. It was getting every new message copied to the sync issues - conflicts folder. Exact replicas at first glance. As it turns out, there is mention of Avast in the header of the message. So every message would show up as “you made changes to this item. click here to see other versions, etc”. These were brand spankin’ new emails. Here’s what I tested along the way:

  1. one 2007 cached mode w/avast and one 2003 online profile w/ SAV 10.1 - still had issue
  2. one 2007 online w/avast and one 2003 online profile w/ SAV 10.1 - issue not happening
  3. two 2003 cached profiles with no avast - issue not happening
  4. one 2007 cached profile w/o avast, one 2003 cached profile w/o Avast - issue not happening
  5. one 2007 cached profile w/avast and one 2003 cached profile - still had issue

The test mailbox resides on an Exchange 2003 SP2 server, and the versions of Outlook are up to date. We do not use the IMF on the server side to filter and do not drop an SCL rating on a message at all. Nor do we use Outlook’s Junk folder feature.

So - it looks like Avast writes/tags/whatever a message as it’s written to the .ost file, and the other profile that doesn’t have Avast running downloads the same message and leaves it in the original state, and there comes the conflict.

Whew. It was painful but it looks like there’s light at the end of the tunnel. Pardon me if this has been found already.

Rafael

rafael, I’m sorry if I’m asking obvious, but you didn’t really describe what your issue is. Are you also seeing the “80040605” error?

Thanks
Vlk

I wasn’t very clear I think - the issue is running outlook 2003 in cached mode with the avast Outlook/Exchange provider on the client.

The main issue we were seeing is that every message that was sent to a mailbox was being copied into the Synch Issues - Conflicts folder. The messages would have the click bar on top that read “you made changes to another version of this item” even though we hadn’t. Looking into the message innards, there was mention of Avast somehow tagging the message, maybe as safe? Dunno. I turned on logging on the Outlook side and viewed the server smtp logs, but nothing jumped out at me.

I prolly should have started new post, eh?
