New install crashes PC with blue screen

I just downloaded and installed the latest version Avast Free 8.0.1483.72. The target machine is a newly rebuilt PC where I had freshly installed Windows Vista Ultimate. Avast was the first program I loaded - and it crashed the PC with a blue screen. Not a good first time user experience !!

Avast installation ran normally until it said it had finished and said it would build a database and scan the PC. At that point the PC crashed with a blue screen. After that it wouldn’t boot. Windows kept complaining about aswVmm.sys being corrupt. After booting in Safe Mode I checked the version of this file. It’s 8.0.1483.72. I did a System Restore which removed Avast. This allowed the PC to boot normally again.

I’ve actually done the whole install sequence twice now and the same thing happened both times.

Unless there is an easy fix, I don’t think I will be installing Avast again. Any suggestions?

The exact same thing happened to me today. I did not see any answer from Support to the previous post regarding this blue screen problem on a new install. I uninstalled the free version. And after looking through other recent forum topics, it appears this is not a great product.
I will not continue to try Avast.

The latest version is 8.0.1489

I don’t know what you expect to find in a support forum, it is where people with problems come for help. If you genuinely want help please start your own new topic and we will try and help.

Any minidump for full dump files, memory.dmp file can be uploaded to avast for analysis to identify the cause. This not only helps you but other users if it is a problem with avast it can be corrected. To identify the cause, avast need information in the form of the dump files.
