new member in trouble

I have combed through a few of the topics and comments but am still unable to detect a clear answer to the following question. Something is happening in my computer that causes the broadband connection to slow to slower than snails pace after a maybe the 10 site is accessed. The avast scanner picked up what would appear to be the culprits - tho’ I had already found them and found I couldn’t get rid of them despite a few tricks I know - hence I downloaded the avast cleaner. Here’s waht it come up with

C:\Documents and Settings\Mutti\Local Settings\Temp\hsperfdata_Mutti\1428… file could not be scanned!
C:\WINDOWS\system32\AVGUARD_439d336d\AV000001dc$0000000d.tmp… file could not be scanned!
C:\WINDOWS\Temp\Perflib_Perfdata_7b0.dat… file could not be scanned!
No virus body found.
Files scanning finished (43571 files, 0 infected, 1043.9s).
Drives scanned: C: E: G:

So I run a google on the hsperfdata, AVGUARD_439d336d\AV000001dc$0000000d.tmp & Perflib_Perfdata. They are known suspects and problem causes.

My questions are 1. are these causing trouble 2. how does one get rid of them 3. why is the cleaner unable to open the file :-\

Researching Google …

I find that several programs create the hsperfdata file including Adobe Acrobat Reader and Java. This probably cannot be scanned because it is most likely a password protected file and cannot be opened for scanning.

AVGUARD is a little different in that if you once had AntiVir anti-virus program on your computer, that could be a leftover file from AntiVir and probably would also be password protected. On the other hand, the NetSky worm also creates a file by this name. http://www.auditmypc.com/process/avguard.asp Have you ever had AntiVir as your computer’s anti-virus program? ???

You did not tell which OS your computer has. Is it Windows 2000 or earlier? If so, the 3rd entry could be part of the OS called Performance Library (Perflib) as shown on this MS page.
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/Windows/2000/server/reskit/en-us/Default.asp?url=/resources/documentation/Windows/2000/server/reskit/en-us/regentry/94219.asp
This file would also be password protected and cannot be opened for scanning.

In summary, I would say these 3 entries are nothing to worry about … unless your computer has never had AntiVir nor isn’t Windows 2000 OS.

I hope this is correct and this will help you.
Please post again if my statements above prove not to be true.

Of course, anyone else is free to correct me also.
