I just got a new PC and would like to continue using avast on this new machine (XP Media Ctr OS). Should I transfer the downloaded file that I still have stored on my old Win98 machine (ver 4.7.844)? Then install it and let it update to .892. Or—should I download the latest version from the web directly? I might add that I don’t have internet access on the new machine as yet and would like to have AntiVirus and ZoneAlarm firewall installed before I go online. I’ve been very happy with avast for this past year on my Win98 machine.
Also… would I use the same license key that I currently have on the Win98 machine?
Personally I would download the latest version using your old system and transfer that, besides being the latest version it will also have a more recent VPS file, so you are better protected from the start.
You can use the existing registration key from the email from avast, not the registration window in about avast as what is displayed isn’t the full key. Depending on how long it has left to run you might consider re-registering http://www.avast.com/i_kat_207.php?lang=ENG and get a new key, which you can use on both systems.
That makes sense… download the latest (.492) THEN txfr. I should have thought of that. DUH! :
Then use the registration key from…
“the email from avast, not the registration window in about avast as what is displayed isn’t the full key.”
I did not know it wasn’t the full key. Makes sense though. I just checked to make sure I still have that ‘avast Registration’ email with the key. Yep, I do… dated 5 Sept 2005. And I see it IS different than what is displayed in the ‘about’ avast. I did update my license—or renew my registration after 1 year… but I’m pretty sure the reg key was the same.
This new PC has NAV trial offer on it - BUT - it’s not been installed. Whew!! Every time I boot the new PC it wants me to install it though. I’m going to delete it thru ‘add remove’ software before my wife accidentally installs it. ;D Hopefully that will go well.
Probably best to get a new registration key and save the email before you install avast on the new system, then you can enter it when you install.
Just in case, A link worth looking at, which is a program removal tool that can remove the remnants of a number of different Norton Programs: Removing your Norton program using SymNRT
You can also download SymNRT, a Norton uninstall tool that uninstalls all Norton 2004/2005/2006 products.
Well it was good that I ran the ‘NAV removal tool’ in addition to uninstall. There were still some remnants (reg keys for instance) that needed to be removed.
Avast install on the new PC went just fine… the reg key went just fine too. But the vps is 0639-1 (dated 25 Sept 06) even though I downloaded avast today. Is there a way to update the data base off line?
If the servers.def file is corrupt or 0KB (C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\servers.def).
You can try and download the servers.def file, http://files.avast.com/iavs4x/servers.def and replace the one in the avast setup folder.
If your subscription allows the update right now (i.e., if it is not expired).
If your firewall settings and allow avast.setup to connect.
If you’re not sure, just turn off your firewall (to be sure the update failure is not due to it).
Maybe you should ‘remove’ avast.setup entry, try to update, receiving a new alert from the firewall, allowing it and checking it to remember.
Check your proxy settings into avast!:
Left click the avast icon > Settings
Update (Basic) > Details > Proxy
Make sure your browser is not set to “Work Offline” (this option is generally in the File menu).
If it doesn’t help, try switching from “Auto-detect” to “No proxy” (I’m assuming you’re not connecting to the Internet via proxy).
You can run proxycfg -d in a DOS window to make your computer connect direct, without proxy. You can run proxycfg -h for help.
If that does not help, please, post the last 100 lines of the logs:
You’re right. The updates expired at Dec 1, 2006. Not sure why - since I just downloaded the avast yesterday and then I put in my current license number from this computer. Upates expire on this computer in Feb 2008… which has the same reg key that I copied to the new PC (still offline).
I guess I’ll just have to wait until I get the new PC online and then register it? Before I do though – should I delete the reg key on the new PC?
I think you should re-register and use a different email address as the registration process recognises you have registered with that email and I believe just sends you a copy.
There are three options if you selected option two then you just get a copy, use option 3 and se what happens if you can’t use a different email.
I’m not sure if deleting the registration key will work without replacing it with another.
I’ll try option ‘3’ and leave the reg key there. Hopefully I’ll get my new PC online later today.
But by description of option 3 (a registered user that has expired), I would think alwil would verify my email addy that I used originally. So I think I should use my original email addy and not a new one.
BUT-- if that fails, I guess I could register as a new user with a new email addy. If all else fails, I guess I would then uninstall/reinstall (and use awsclear) then register as new usere/new email addy.
