I thought I had my avast set to not auto program update. but today my zone alarm firewall says that the avast program had been updated and I had to give it permission to do whatever. So I click ok. but if it did auto update does avast not notify you that an update has taken place? well, after the update I ran a virus db update which seemed to have done another program update instead and made me restart my computer. afterwards running a manual program update downloaded something that took forever to install. is there anyone here who can check to see what updates were going on on my system and if everything went as it should. I had some issues on the last update when I manually did a program update. but as I said this time it seems to have autoupdated for me.
It doesn’t, it checks for updates and if one is available it tells you.
The default setting for Program Updates because there are larger and likely to take longer, is to check and ask if available.
However, you may be suffering from something that is asking you to reboot after an auto update check. Check this topic http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=28199.0 and see if this matches your symptoms and try the suggested resolution.
What avast! version and VPS file (virus database) number, e.g. avast 4.7.1001 and VPS 000738-4 (see about avast!) ?

Strange that it has updated… seems all the time nothing was updated…
well, my computer has been acting weird today. all the sudden lost internet connection. restarted my computer, it was at my login screen. came back 10 minutes later screen was black and computer was locked.
also, when I finally did restart and login I could not start any programs from the desktop and only a few from the quickstart. does this seem like a virus?
however, when I restarted again I saw that windows was updating something. is there a windows update today and is that what could be causing all my problems?
Yes Patch Tuesday is upon us once again and for several days after you are likely to suffer at the hands of windows update, slow boot and if you have any other program updates (like avast) it could interfere with those. I had auto updates set to notify but not download (dial-up), I then selected what to download, but even then it could take three days on occasion for my place in the queue to be able to download them.
I have now gone to the point of manually downloading the individual update files and saving them on my HDD and installing them once of line. Prior to installing these updates I also back-up my system taking an image of my drive, so if I experience any issues with the update it is easy to reverse.
David, the updates set to notify will start the Windows Update service and all scanning, with slow boots, etc., won’t it?
I have mine disabled and I’ve made a particular script to start them and run Windows Update. It’s working like a charm and better, WHEN I WANT…
You’re patient and cautious… I admire you… I’m lazy to check each update before… If something get wrong, I’ll need to restore my partition image.
Nothing to do with patience, caution yes, but for the main reason I’m on dial-up so I take it in manageable chunks and any screw up with a bad update usually means lots of time and effort tracking it down. Much easier an quicker to restore the image.
I have stopped doing special image before installing the updates, now I download the individual patches after Patch Tuesday and put them on hold until my back-up Image on the Sunday, so after patch Tuesday for me comes Install Sunday ;D
In the meantime I usually receive my copy of the Windows Secrets newsletter that usually covers the Patches, any possible adverse reactions, recommendations and then only install those with a clean bill of health. This cuts down on any checking I might to do.
Is it this one? Does it worth?
https://windowssecrets.com/info/
Yes, that is it, I think it is worth it, I have the paid version. This newsletter is now an amalgamation of Windows Secrets (formerly windows secrets and woody’s windows watch) and the Langa List newsletter. I was a paid subscriber to both so now only one paid subscription.
That was my fear… the pro version could worth, the free, I’m not so sure…
