new registration key

I have successfully put in my new registration key which says its good until march 2008 but my avast won’t update. I get an error saying license is valid until dec 31, 1969. When I open my avast and click about avast it says it expires march 1, 2008. I have tried reinstalling license key and it says it is successful but I still get the error. Running windows xp home and IE 7. Here is a log file of what it says, look at the last entry:

Basically, check:

  1. If the servers.def file is corrupt or 0KB (C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\servers.def).
You can try and download the servers.def file, http://files.avast.com/iavs4x/servers.def and replace the one in the avast setup folder.

  2. If your firewall settings and allow avast.setup to connect.
If you’re not sure, just turn off your firewall (to be sure the update failure is not due to it).
Maybe you should ‘remove’ avast.setup entry, try to update, receiving a new alert from the firewall, allowing it and checking it to remember.

  3. Check your proxy settings into avast!:
Left click the avast icon > Settings
Update (Basic) > Details > Proxy
Make sure your browser is not set to “Work Offline” (this option is generally in the File menu).
If it doesn’t help, try switching from “Auto-detect” to “No proxy” (I’m assuming you’re not connecting to the Internet via proxy).
You can run proxycfg -d in a DOS window to make your computer connect direct, without proxy. You can run proxycfg -h for help.

  4. In your error message the 0x00000005 windows error means ‘Access is denied.’
Are you running this from a limited user account or an account with administrator privileges?

I figured it out. I have spycatcher running and it was blocking the update files. I don’t know why it started doing this, I’ve been running spycatcher and avast together for quite a while now. Spycatcher was blocking “reccommended removal” from occurring which was associated with avast so I changed the setting to allow it to run and avast updated properly after that. Thanks for the tips, after trying to disable the firewall and nothing I thought of checking spycatcher to see if it had blocked anything associated with avast.

Glad to know you’re ok now…
