Just a short heads up: we have just released another (official) program update of avast Home/Pro.
The details can be found on the revision history page.
Generally, everyone is suggested to upgrade to this new build.
Thanks

Updating now!
Doing it so…
To the lazy ones:
Version 4.8.1287
November 18, 2008
* improvements in the malware submission system
* minor improvements in some unpackers
* improvements in the rootkit scanner
* Network Shield: solved a problem occurring on systems with missing TCP stack
Updating now, not so big this one, a bit easier on my dial-up.
Love this update.
It solved one of my issues with the network scanning tool.
Actually, it’s now 4.8.1290.
Yeah… don’t even ask. ;D
Well… we’ll ask of course… I didn’t have even time to boot after the other update…
Are you sure…?
I just dd the update 10-20 min ago and my avast shows it’s build number as being 4.8.1287.
What is going on?
ok…now I’m worried,
I did another update and indeed, i ended up gettin the version you mentioned…What is going on?
Well I have just updated again and it most certainly is 4.8.1290, lots of fun today ;D
All it is is some changes have been made, perhaps a little quicker than we are used to with avast, but rather that than a possible problem detected and not corrected quickly. That way few peopl other than us on the forums would even notice with the seven day update cycle.
Thanks,
That puts me at ease a bit.
Hmmm, I had to. ???

One more confused question from a new member. I just updated Avast this morning after installing yesterday. Reading this thread, I decided to check the version number. About Avast says 1282! hmmm?
Tried to repeat update. Updater says that program is up to date. Good! About still says 1282!
What’s going on? Do I have to reboot or update with administrator rights in order to get the right version number?
XP pro SP2+
Update: after a double reboot, everything seems to be fine. After reboot, Avast requests another reboot!? Is this really the best you can do?
I always reboot after an update to the AV program itself whether it was requested or not.
I requested an update and received 1287 yesterday afternoon. I rebooted upon request.
I requested an update and received 1290 yesterday evening. I rebooted upon request.
This procedure was done on 1 Vista and 2 XP Pro computers with nary a problem.
Do I have to reboot or update with administrator rights in order to get the right version number?
Yes and yes.
After reboot, Avast requests another reboot!? Is this really the best you can do?
There were two programs updates today.
Yeah… don’t even ask. ;D
Why god, WHY?
Just kidding, updated here now, everything is working just fine!
luckily I’ve already had a look at this topic, I updated Avast three days ago or so to 4.8.1282. and I’ll upgrade it now to 4.8.1290 to try the newest release
Yeah, the 1287 build (which was online for just a couple of hours, really) contained a stupid bug in one of the program modules (ashTask.dll). That’s why 1290 was released asap.
Cheers, and sorry for this

Thanks a lot for the clarifications, guys.
So Avast doesn’t load new modules until reboot? Other security products like Antivir and a-squared seem to be able to load updates on the fly. One may not be able to restart a computer for a long time, so urgent updates will just have to wait?
Updates are several times a year, 4 - 5 times. I don’t know of any program, Antivir or other that is able to UNLOAD tdi filter driver, once loaded.
