New to Avast 4.8 Home Edition.......I cant run the update

When i try to run the update it says connection terminated, retrying. And then it just sits there.

Hopefully there is a simple solution.

We will need more information to be able to help you:

  • Which OS are you using? Is it up to date?
  • What avast! version and VPS file (virus database) number?
  • Do you use a firewall? Which one?
  • Do you have any other antivirus installed in your system? Did you have in the past?
  • Any other security programs that could interfere?

Get the Norton removal tool from here http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039 run it the re-install avast

i’ve used the norton uninstall tool and used my activation key that i got by email, i still get the same thing.

Don’t do that. avast is an antivirus only, not a firewall.

I suggest an installation from the scratch:

  1. Uninstall avast from Control Panel first.
  2. Boot.
  3. Download the latest version of Avast Uninstall and use it for complete uninstallation.
  4. Boot.
  5. Install again the latest avast! version.
  6. Boot.
  7. Check and post the results.

Ok, i think i have it but now i’ve forgotten something.

I was messing around before i uninstalled and found where i can change my proxy settings for updates. I think i went from something like detect proxy settings automatically to bypassing them for updates. Hope this makes sense.

I’ve reinstalled avast, now i can’t remember where i changed those settings. Not sure if it was part of the program or on my pc.

Help appreciated.

Program settings > Update (Connections) > Proxy
