hi every1. well so far i think i love avast. seems like the best av program i’ve used thus far and the quick updates are great seeing as how i am on dial up. but i have some questions. is the on access protection the same as a firewall? or do i need a seperate firewall. i read that you should uninstall other av and firewall programs before you use avast. i have norton security with firewall on my computer but i have disabled it. what should i do? if i uninstall that , should i get another firewall program or is avast enough. i also have adaware. also, i noticed that my avast icon has not been spinning when i use internet explorer but if i pull up netscape…it does. does this mean it’s not working correctly? and if so, is it because of norton? by the way, if this is a free program, why do we have to register after 60 days? thanks to all who read and respond. i just had a big problem with my computer and i want to make sure i do this right.
You need a separate firewall, avast isn’t a firewall.
Two providers Web Shield and network Shield may appear to do the same as a firewall but they don’t. The avast help file gives a reasonable explanation of their function.
The only not of caution on Norton products, what ever you do don’t install the anti-virus element, the firewall element should be ok.
Registration gives avast a gage of the installed user base and the distribution for different countries, the information isn’t used for any other purpose. It is I think a small price/inconvenience for an excellent product (especially free).
There are paid for versions of some software that you also have to register not to mention activate in some cases, you would think after buying it you owned it ;D
Hi awhispersecho, and welcome on the best AV forum 8)
First advice: you should first uninstall Norton with specific tools (as quick as possible!)
Second point: Avast! isn’t a firewall, so you should use Sygate or Zonealarm.
AD-Aware is really a good product, so keep it on your desktop (you can also use Spybot).
