I’m pretty basic in my understanding of how this whole computer thing works. ??? That said, I understand less about Avast.
Problem; I have a “locked” folder, (My Safe), in My Documents. It requires a password to open, today it would not open. A message window identified an anti virus program as a possible problem. I stopped the “On-Access” protection & whala :o.
Question; Is there one area/module I could shut down/disable that may aliveate this problem.
Hi gridcowboy,
Welcome to the forums.
Maybe I’m a little confused. If you have a password protected folder,
then avast! can’t access it and can’t scan anything within that folder since
avast! doesn’t know the password. ??? ???

avast doesn't lock files or folders, it only scans content and if infected will alert you, if the file is infected it will effectively stop you executing that file but it shouldn't stop access to a folder.
Is it possible that you had the caps lock on or made a typo and the password failed after disabling avast you could have entered the password correctly or the caps lock was off ?

From what program ?
What reason did it give why an AV would possibly do this ?
I am having the same problem, and will try to shed a little light on the situation. I just purchased a brand new Toshiba Satellite A100, which comes with a nifty fingerprint scanner, which can put in passwords by swiping your finger over the scanner. Part of the software included with this device is a ‘My Safe’ folder which is locked and unlocked by the fingerprint scanner.
The problem arises when you go to open the folder. You swipe your finger, or put in the password, and it comes up with a dialog box saying…
“Cannot create My Safe view object.
My Safe cannot be unlocked because its data file is currently in use or just was used by some other application. Unlocking cannot proceed until the My Safe data file is closed and removed from the operating system’s file cache. This is usually a temporary condition. Wait a few seconds and try again.”
The reason this happens (I’m guessing here) is avast! is trying to scan the contents of the folder for viruses, and this is stopping the safe from being unlocked. (not sure on the details)
I have tried setting the folder as an exception in avast! to no avail. The only way to access the folder is to turn off avast! which is something i would rather not do too often.
Your explanation of your problem, makes me think that the my-safe application has some form of anti-tamper mechanism if outside action is trying to get into the safe or scan its contents it won’t open until that activity has stopped. If this is the case then avast isn’t the cause and any other AV that has on-access resident scanners would do the same unless it has a less aggressive scanning of file types, etc.
I can’t understand why the exclusions don’t work, there are two locations you need to exclude, Program Settings, Exclusions (for on-demand scans) and the Standard Shield, Customize button, Advanced (for the on-access scans).
Did you use both exclusion locations and what did you type for the exclusion path ?
e.g. C:\Documents and Settings\YourUserName\My Documents\My Safe*.* Or C:*\My Documents\My Safe*.*
I tried the second example but to the My Music folder and it works for the on-demand scanner so it should also work for the on-access standard shield scanner.
C:\Documents and Settings\YourUserName\My Documents\My Safe*
for both on-demand scans and the standard shield. However, if I deactivate the standard shield (leaving the rest of the providers active) the My Safe folder will open and unlock successfully. My guess is the ‘My Safe’ folder also monitors the OS file cache as well, and avast! is scanning that file, triggering the security mechanism.
I will try to locate which file ‘My Safe’ uses in the cache and add that to the exception list and I’ll post how i go.
I think you need C:\Documents and Settings\YourUserName\My Documents\My Safe*.* (all files in the my safe folder) otherwise it may be looking for sub folders under My Safe and I’m not sure if it would include files in the my safe folder.
There really isn’t much point in trying to find the specific file if the my safe folder is password protected and possibly encrypted ( ? ), just exclude all files . in the folder.
Ok, i just tried the . method and that also didnt work. Ive done a little research as to how this folder works, and yes it is encrypted. Still looking into how the ‘My Safe’ folder works.
Once the folder is Unlocked, you can open and close it as often as you like, and any program or user can access it untill you Relock it, can even restart the standard shield while its unlocked, only when locking and unlocking is it a problem.
