I’ve been an AVG user for years and last night converted to Avast. Know it’s a matter of learning new program, but for my comfort level, I would like to know if my email from my 2 gmail accounts is being scanned on incoming?
When mail comes into my regular email account, I see the avast globe turning in my navigation area; however, when the mail for my gmail accounts comes in, that globe is not turning.
So, is that mail actually getting scanned?
Thanks,
Julea
The short answer is no.
If you are downloading it through your email program (which is ?) then it will be using SSL secure encrypted email (which uses different port numbers, see below), the point of which is to keep prying eyes out.
The avast email scanner only monitors port 25 smtp, 110 pop3, 119 news and 143 imap, so any other traffic not using those protocols and ports would be ignored.
You can use a third party interface like STunnel so that avast can intercept the traffic going through that to scan it before or after it gets unencrypted. There are a number of topics on the forums that deal with setting up avast and STunnel to work together if you wish to go down that road, just say.
If you are using the web mail interface via your browser then I believe the web shield would scan the traffic if it wasn’t https secure pages.
What DavidR said. If you go for stunnel, then, you may find Email Scanner Problem helpful.
If you happen to be using IMAPs on Gmail, which is unlikely, you may be interested in taking a look on Configuring Stunnel using 2 email accounts (gmail-imap/smtp & yahoo-pop/smtp), too.
Feel free to ask for further help on using Gmail, avast and Stunnel if you need
