New to avast

Hello im Den

Taday for the first time i have been using avast home edition

What i had noticed is that one of the componants is not active,

Internet mail - provider is currently running

Network - provider is currently running

out/look exchange - provider is waiting for subsystem to start

Web shield - provider is currently running

the out/look exchange is saying waiting to start, Can anyone tell me what i need to be doing or is this in normal state i guess im not that techie when it comes to AV

that is normal as it only starts when you load the program as it uses a plug-in, the others you listed are also fine

I noticed you havent installed (or listed) the other providers eg P2P provider, standard shield and instant messaging provider if you have them installed they should also be listed as currently running

welcome to Avast

Hi there

I had a msg saying tha avast was not compatibale with Norton system EVEN though im not using this AV, it just pops up on the start-up of my pc, it mentioned that it had now disabled provider p2p, standard shield and instant msg what do i need to do now, thanks

TY

You should only have one antivirus running at any one time so sometimes the two can conflict, I use to have Norton but I became annoyed with it due to some issues and then I moved to Avast

@ den21
Was Norton ever installed on this system (some new systems come pre-installed with trial versions) and if so how was it removed ?

Do you have MS Outlook, not express ?
If so then the Outlook/Exchange provider shouldn’t be running, the sub system it is waiting for is MS Outlook.

Hi David

Yes when i first bought my pc Norton it was a trail run version, but now i dont use it.

Ok not sure about MS outlook but it does show Outlook/exchange - provider waiting for subsystem start

i don’t see anything saying MS outllook

Not using it isn’t enough it has to be removed, use add remove programs to uninstall it. It can be a pig to get rid of completely so you should also use this. A link worth looking at, which is a program removal tool that can remove the remnants of a number of different Norton Programs:
Removing your Norton program using SymNRT
Or ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/removal_tools/Norton_Removal_Tool.exe

Now once completely avast might well run normally but possibly not and you may need to reinstall avast.

If your not sure about MS Outlook I doubt that you have it so the Outlook/Exchange provider needs to be terminated, that however, is a minor issue which can wait until the above is resolved.

Hi Dave

Done what you had told me i uninstalled Norton completely, what i have noticed is that the avast icon in the tray is now spinning around is that a good sign?, and when i put the mouse on the icon it says ( 7 providers in total and 6 running

All 6 are active now, but the outlook/exchange is still saying waiting to start

Yes it is a good sign as it indicates that avast is scanning files.

That would be correct based on what I said before and the fact that you don’t have MS Outlook the Outlook/Exchange provider isn’t enabled by default. So all is correct.

Left click on the icon that you saw rotating and another window will open, the avast! on-access scanner window. If you see a Details… >> button click on it and you get a more detailed view that shows all the providers running and disabled.

From here you have access to their individual settings, have a look around, but don’t go changing anything from the defaults. They provide the best balance between protection and performance, so leaving them whilst you get to know the program is best. Check out the avast help file, Resident Protection for information on each provider/shield and its settings.

Getting late here a little after 1:15 a.m and my bed is calling, good night.

Thankyou everyone

I’m glad i had the help needed here i would of not known anything, yes Dave i see the on access scanner and will have a look but will be careful not to alter anything all looks good now, so i shall say goodnite for now

Since you have a new system unless you paid for the Microsoft Office Suite to be pre-loaded on your system then you almost certainly do not have Microsoft Outlook installed.

If that is the case then you do not need to have the Outlook/Exchange provider running on your system. You can select the “Teminate” option for that provider and tell avast to “persist” that decision. Then the Outlook/Exchange provider will not be started by avast on your next system start and it will show only 6 out of 7 providers running.

Ok thanks i see the outlook/exchange Terminate button, is it necesarry to Terminate or can i just leave it as it is?

If you let it running it won’t take resources. You can let it working (without terminating it).
It only starts when and if Outlook started.

OK so it would be best to Terminate then, can you explain what you mean about resources, i need alot of coaching lol

what tech means is that leaving as it is now on “waiting for sub system to start” isnt using resources its only when you open outlook does it properly start working so you can leave it as it is

the provider you are referring to isnt running as such until outlook is opened then it starts and when you close outlook again it stops and seeing as you dont use it no resources are being used anyway

OK i think i understand now ;0 thanks,

can you also tell me how i can download other skins for the interface menu and for the on Access MENU i would like to see what other skins are available to use.

http://avast.com/eng/skins.html

Lots of nice skins to choose from there, i like all of them  can you also change the skin to the ON ACCESS Scanner interface

as far as I know the skins only apply to the main avast program interface but I am not 100% sure

The On Access Scanner does not have an interface ???
