New to Avast

My first scan was on the 28/1/09. I noticed today that in the Virus Chest under System files there were three files. These were kernel32.dll winsock.dll and wsock.dll all three found in C:\windows\system32 location. These originated from May 2008 and where transferred into the Virus Chest on the 28/1/09 which was my first Avast scan. The report says that there was no virus found in each of these files, so I am not sure why they are there and what I should do about them. Why would they have been put in the virus chest if there weren’t any viruses found?

Any help would be appreciated please. I am running Windows XP.

hi baberainbow -

These are only copies of these system files. They were put there by avast as replacements if a need arises. There is no need to worry about them and it is ok to leave them there since the originals are still in their proper places.

Thanks for a speedy reply, this is good news I will leave them where they are. What a friendly, nice Forum and so helpful.

I really do wish Alwil would get rid of this All Chest Files collation of the three sections.

  • The only area you should be interested in is the Infected Files section, this is where the files detected by avast and selected by you to move to the chest are placed.
  • The User Files section is where the user can add files they suspect of being malware but not detected by avast.
  • The System Files section is where avast keeps back-up copies of important system files in case the original becomes infected (leave them alone).
