New unknown virus?

Hello,

I have a serious problem - a couple of weeks ago my computer wont odd all of the sudden.

Symptoms:

  1. Windows (XP SP2) hangs for a bit when starting up - just after login and before taskbar/icons are displayed)

  2. I can drag anything - Icons/files on desktp and URL in IE or Firefox

  3. Can’t copy/paste - although it works in some programs.

  4. Can’t install or even uninstall.

  5. AVAST gets dissabled on startup/doesnt start (log says “The RPC server is unavailable”)

  6. Can’t run online scanners - some complaint that ActiveX isn’t running, although it is enabled in options - others behave like they have a null start button/link that doesn’t do anything.

  7. Tried several trial trojan scanners - none of them can find anything.

  8. AVAST… doesn’t report anything after a manual restart and scan.

  9. Network is disabled but internet is working.

  10. System restore doesn’t work.

  11. Windows repair doesn’t work.

  12. Format and reinstalll seemed to work… but only for a week or even less.

  13. Booting to Safe Mode doesn’t help - can’t copy/paste, drag etc. there too.

So… I’m now VERY frustrated - I don’t know whats causing this and I’ve turned the internet upside down to find clues but didn’t find any that came near.
