New Update of Avast free

I am a long time user of full paid security software but after a recent infection the people who assisted my clean suggested I try Avast.
Long story short, we have been using Avast free for a couple of months and with the exception of one thing are impressed with your product.
And the exception… for the love of all that is holy, enough with the spam… I now have google chrome and I don’t want it, I didn’t load it because I don’t want it… that’s should be a beep beep beeping hint.
And then what is it with that really annoying shopping thing you have bundled into Avast, the beeping thing is trying to intercept my online banking and suggesting something completely irrelevant and beeping well not wanted.

Anyway… thanks for what appears to be a a good product… I see it scored very well in a PCMag report on the best antivirus test http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2482246,00.asp

To a certain extent, avast is banking on it’s non-tech users to just do a regular install and except all the defaults.
As well as the A/V shields, some other components get installed, as you can see. Whether they’re worth anything to you
or whether avast is the main beneficiary of you installing them, is open for debate. I have never installed any of them.

Tech users always do a custom install, this allows you to deselect Skype or Chrome and all of the optional components
as you wish.

Yes I would normally uncheck the addons but this one caught me out.
It arrived as a popup stating an Avast update is available and I clicked install, I didn’t realise it was more of a complete reinstall than an update…

Hi Berty1,

If you wish to change or remove some of the features you do not want, go to Programs and Features (or similar) and highlight avast.

Right-click it and choose change. You must be in an administrator account. Untick features you do not want. Allow avast to complete. When done, reboot.

To prevent this scenario in the future, look to the bottom of the new install window and always select ‘Custom Install’ when you install avast or reinstall.
