New Update--wanted to share!

 Just wanted to share this, as it may help someone else.
I did find something interesting after I did 3 clean re-installs ( I have Avast Internet Security 7)
My computer was continually downloading stuff— didn’t know what stuff, but I knew something was not right when I checked my Web shield.
I went into every step of the settings process and found that in the troubleshooting section under the redirect settings, information from my computer was being sent to over 30 different places. ??? I have cleaned that up by removing all the port settings (both web and mail), but thought it may help someone else.

I am running Windows XP-SP3, Avast Internet Security 7.0.1456, MBAM, CCleaner, Custom built 64 bit processor. Did I forget something important?

Since you have manually removed all your ports then that maybe why your having troubles with your avast not working http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=101074.msg808433#msg808433

I believe what you have done is disabled the web shield and mail shield by doing this. Deleting the redirect settings in the troubleshooting area is not a permanent solution.

I would look further into this by reading the firewall logs and network activity.

With the redirect settings restored, you might be able to view what the web shield is scanning. I think it would be important to find out what ‘stuff’ your computer is connecting to. Maybe it was avast updating??? Removing the redirect settings will hide any problem that may exist and reduce security.

Thank you both for replying. No, my disabling all the trouble shooting ports wasn’t the issue. Asyn just told me to change my connection for my updates from the original (info set by avast!) settings. It worked!
Thanks for your help and for at least reading my posts. I may be old in in years, but my techno age is about equal to my 7 year old grand daughter. ;D
