New user activation key won't work-invalid every try!

??? I registered, Avast sent me the key, I copied & pasted it into the proper spot and got “invalid key”.
So I tried again of course, tried a different method of C&Ping, wrote the # down and manually entered it, cut it and pasted, all to no avail. ::slight_smile: I am always logged in as Administrator, my date is correct (1:16AM march 21, 2007 it says right now) and I’m running IE7 on Windows XP SP2 and regularly go to MS for updates. Maybe I should try again with Mozilla? I’ve rcvd two more emails from Avast that had the same key number and I used both emails but still I get “invalid key” every time. I searched here and FAQ’s on the site and I give up after killing well over an hour.
Any ideas? :frowning: Maybe AVG aint so bad after all?!

UPDATE: I don’t have a blue ball in my system tray. It showed up on my desktop and there’s a link in ‘all programs’ when I click ‘start’ that takes me to a box that is where I tried to insert my license key. But there haint nut’n in the tray. Maybe that’s the problem? I even tried downloading again but no ball. OY! I found a setup log while cruisin’ & though I know approximately ZERO about anything in there, there sure were a LOT of “not okay”'s but zero “okay”'s.

Well, I still have no word from Alwil & I’ve spent hours trying to figure this out. I can’t spend anymore time on this. I should have spent the money for a real utility with support. In fact, this is the ONLY post that has zero replies and it’s been what? 12 hours or something like that? Sheesh! Thanks anyway.
Maybe this is not good. Maybe I need to go to work now. Maybe I have no replys because I’m a bonehead and the answer is right in from of my eyes. Well, I’ll hang til tonight when I get back from the quarry but I need some protection fast.

Did you uninstall AVG first?

Did you use the Trial version period? Did you use avast more than once? I mean, uninstalling and installing again?

Well… for free, you can’t demand us, users, to help quicker than we could…

I have been trying to install the license key for 2 days now, and I paid for avast 5.0. I can’t seem to figure it out. I tried the link which cuts off my internet (expl.8) I tried to copy & paste, I typed it in. Still nada. What in the world am I doing that is wrong. I contacted avast sales, no return info from them

Hi jj1982,

On-line registration is very simple and it’s the preferred method for all users of Avast Antivirus 5.0 installed on a computer with standard Internet connectivity. To perform on-line (or off-line) registration, follow these steps:

http://support.avast.com/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=459. The link will explain both methods and show you how to do it in the GUI Main Summary page.

Hi All, I am having this problem as well. I believe it might be an issue with the computer. I was asked to remove Desktop Security 2010. The computer had avast on it the last time I saw it. It is gone. I have tried every method listed here to register and followed all the links. I also tried the cleaner to uninstall and reinstall. Still won allow me to register , says invalid. using Avast 5 free version on XP SP3 on a Compaq Media Center Edition

mwilson90065,

Check your computer for malware with Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware (MBAM).
· Download free http://www.malwarebytes.org/ for an on-demand scanner.
· Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
· After install, click update so you have latest database before scanning.
· Under Settings:
o General: Automatically Save File After Scan Completes is checked off
o Scanner Settings: Check all boxes
o Updater: Download and install update if available is checked off
· Once the program has loaded, select “Perform Quick Scan”, then click Scan.
· The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.
· When the disinfection scan is complete, a log will appear in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Extra Note).
· Click the “remove selected” button to quarantine anything found. You will find the infection details under the Quarantine tab.
· The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
· Copy & Paste the entire report in your next reply if anything positive comes up. Otherwise, just report back to us that MBAM came back clean.

If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts – Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process; If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

If MBAM comes back clean, I suggest an uninstall of Avast and CLEAN install to fix your problems:

  1. Save a copy of newest version of Avast (5.0.594) for the version you need and save it to your HDD:
    Freehttp://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_free.exe
  2. Download the Avast Uninstall Utility, aswClear5.exe http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility and save it to your HDD.
  3. Disconnect from the Internet at this time.
  4. Uninstall Avast through “Add/Remove Programs”.
  5. Boot into Safe Mode and run the Avast Uninstall Tool.
  6. Reboot twice.
  7. Clean your computer up (clean up cache, etc.).
  8. Install the newest version of Avast and reboot twice.
  9. Get Internet access and update Avast definitions.
  10. Register your copy or add the license key for Free.
  11. Run a scan (try a Boot-Time Scan initially to check for malware - it will take a while).

Please post your results. Thank you.
