Installed v4 Home this week, and can no longer receive EMail. I have Windows98, Outlook Express.
I can still connect to my dialup ISP ,and collect mail via Webmail, but my Outlook Express now seems to send E-Mail only. Not receive. Tried installing Eudora to try, and it appears the same. Using ports 110 rec and 25 snd.
Tried uninstall of AVAST still same problem. Back in again and same. I think it is working otherwise for normal internet connection but not absolutely sure.
Problem is that Outlook now always reports no new mail.
Can anyone make suggestion? … Hamus

Hi Hamus,
set up your accounts in outlook express as normal, then use the mail wizzard of avast to configure everything. If you have a personal firewall installed then check if Avast has access to your internet connection.

Thanks Peter. I tried the Wizard in auto mode and again in manual with setup for Outlook Express only. No Joy!
WebMail is OK and OutlookExpress sends but will not receive. Reports No Mail.
No firewall. only Avast no other filters. In fact the machine is stripped to Win98, I.E. , Outlook Express, and Avast. nothing else.
Any other tests you might suggest?

hamus,
Did you also try the “Unprotect all my accounts” in the mail protection wizard and then I would try a reboot and then another mail protection wizard and then “Protect all my accounts” and choose “All future accounts” also.
Let us know if that works.
I know win98 needs to use the mail protection wizard

No - I didn’t do an unprotect first - but I will go and try what you suggest right now and let you know.

I believe outlook express has to be off for it to work

No Joy.
Well I tried doing it that way and no change.
I installed that new Mozilla mail program - Thunderbird today, and it behaves exactly the same way. No error messages, just will not report incoming messages that do show up on ISP’s WebMail.
Telephoned the ISP they “claim” that if the mail is showing up on their WebMail, the ports 110 and 25 are OK. In other words " not their problem".
I think the mail is in fact coming in - going out to avast but not coming back. Does this make sense?

What’s your ISP, and what’s your e-mail provider name ? If you don’t know, ask them does your e-mail uses SSL (Secure Socket Layer) connections ? If it does, you have to be aware that avast! doesn’t support SSL connections for now… in future maybe, but for now it doesn’t.
We should wait for respond from someone from Alwil staff to see is there any workaround for this…
Cheers !

Well, I’m afraid I have got myself into a fine mess here.
They say not SSL.
I went out and picked up another computer and installed Eudora in it - no avast this time - but:
Nothing has changed. No error messages - all seems to run normally - just no reported EMail. but it does show up when I check their WebMail.
It appears that my experimentation with avast has somehow blocked the reception of my EMail from my ISP to a “normal” EMail client.
And it now appears to me that this has ocuured at the ISP!! Is this possible?
They of course don’t want to hear that. So I guess I’m now stuck with their WebMail.
I can’t seem to wrap my mind around this one.
