I am using Firefox as my browser and just installed Avast (2/18/09). I need help with the update(connections) settings. I connect using DSL, but I shut my computer down and turn off the modem when not in use. Do I check the box that says “My computer is permanently connected to the internet” or do I not check off anything? Also, do I need to do anything with the proxy setting, such as direct connect(no proxy) or auto detect(using internet explorer settings) since I am using Firefox?

I would say leave it at the “My computer is permanently connected to the internet”

If you don’t use a Proxy then set it to Direct connection (No proxy).

However, left on the default settings it would still work as avast would check for either dial-up or permanent connection and the same for the proxy it would check IE’s settings. By being more specific it just means avast doesn’t waste time checking where it doesn’t need to.
