I just did my first scan with avast. It detected a virus in my system volume information. They didn’t repair so I moved them to the chest.
My questions are: There are 2000 files that avast said it couldn’t scan. What does this mean and what do I do about that.
Is there a “best” sequence for dealing with an infection? I imagine repair is first. When I attemped to delete the file it was going to put it in my recycle bin which didn’t seem safe.
I searched for this info here but the search came up empty. Any help would be appreciated.
It’s hard to say what were those 2000 files without any additional information. What were the file names / locations of them?
It’s possible that they were inside some password-protected archives - then they couldn’t be scanned, of course. It’s quite common in various spyware-removal software etc.
As I said - some of them store its internal data as password-encrypted archives (ZIP, for example). These files are identified as ZIP archives by avast! - and it tries to unpack them (and scan their content). However, it fails - since it doesn’t know the password necessary to unpack them. Therefore, you get the warning that the file couldn’t be scanned.
But you don’t have to worry about the infection in this case.
