I am a new Avast free version user. I decided to manually generate a VRDB and then let the generate when idle feature do its thing after the first manual generation. The VRDB icon has been spinning for 1 1/2 hours and still has not completed. Is this normaly long when generating VRDB for the first time? I am running Vista 64-bit if that makes a difference. Thanks for any help.
It will take a long time, maybe days, however since you have it set to run when idle it uses little resources.
Thanks for reply. I did search for similar question before I posted and I thought I saw some posts tha said that the manual VRDB took less time than days so I thought that I had a problem.
One of the things you haven’t mentioned is how much is on your HDD, this is mainly .exe as the VRDB only looks at the executables I don’t know if that also means .dll files, etc. So if you have lots of applications on the system it might take some time first time through.
I only ever do manual generations (I have it set to generate on screen saver and I don’t use a screen saver so it won’t run) every third week as part of my regular system maintenance. Whilst I don’t have a lot of clutter on my system it only takes minutes and not many of those either, not hours to generate.
I take it that this is for the first manual generate now generation and not generate whilst idle as Styx is thinking ?
Have you been doing anything else whilst this is going on ?
What other security applications do you have installed ?
Have (or did) you another AV installed in this system, if so what was it and how did you get rid of it ?
I don’t know if it is different for vista64 though I wouldn’t have thought so.
I did not want to ignore your inquiries, VRDB generation completed soon after I posted my question. Thanks for your thoughts to help.
You’re welcome.
The questions you can take into consideration on how they might effect VRDB generation.
