[b]Last year I bought McAfee Suite that has virus, firewall, spyware, etc.
Subscription expired, and before it did, goofy stuff began to happen with it.
If I download Avast home free edition, do I need to remove McAfee? or can I leave it there?
I have the windows firewall…but that isn’t so great…is it?
McAfee still performs scans even though it is expired, so I assume that means it is no longer updating?
I am very dis-satisfied with the way McAfee treats it’s customers, looking for a new route.
If your McAfee subscription is expired you are on your own
It must be removed completely before installing any other Antivirus
same as Norton or Panda in that regard
BVVC with Uni Blue as is sometimes (and once is enough) wishes to remove vital things - always quarantine do not remove/delete so that you can restore when, for example, your Internet connection dies
HJT
run a SCAN ONLY if you wish but do not FIX anything without help in the AVAST MALWARE REMOVAL FORUM
DO NOT USE THE AUTOMATED ADVISERS WITH HJT as even worse results happen than with registry clean up tools
CCleaner
use it all the time
however if you suspect malware
DO NOT USE IT as vital logs and other information will be removed
wait till after any malware is completely removed
Malware Bytes Anti Malware and Rogue Remover great products
(as with all products including Avast check for false positives- quarantine do not remove/delete
what firewall?
other products none of the above mentioned is proactive
Spyware Blaster- free no resources- blocks bad active X (even if you just use IE for Windows Updates, and other programs that require IE)
Spybot Search and destroy
in a similar catagory with MBAM update and re immunize every Wednasday
new versions of SD-Helper for IE and T-timer coming soon so do not install for now- uncheck the boxes during installation T-Timer and SD helper are proactive if you need this protection
the Immunization feature works well and manually update every Wednasday- no big deal
you will find spybot more useful than Ad-aware (as ad-aware ever found anything significant- well sometimes stars cross and it does)
How’s the Mcafee removal coming
definitely a place to run CCleaner when finished and set a new restore point
Scotty the win patrol watchdog will monitor critical system points during his rounds and allow you to reverse unwanted changes light on resources good dog
you could keep the Mcafee firewall for now and just remove the AV
The firewall should not need updating- at least till you lpick a new one
and with the Mcafee ratings perhaps that would be a good move in any case
anyone else want to put their two cents in?
did you say what os?
have you run the secunia advisor to make sure all of your software is up to date?
baddies are getting through old java and adobe among others
ps Windows Defender is the renamed Windows Anti Spyware which is a renamed Giant Anti Spyware that MS bought
NOT A FIREWALL
