new user, old problems/questions?

Hi there, AVG binned, Avast running in it’s place.

A couple of questions though -

I queried the definitions update/reboot problem at VirtualDr Forum (they recommended Avast in the first place) and I was told -

“It doesn’t usually reboot. That would/should only happen if it updates the engine and that isn’t a common occurence. It probably will stop doing that once the new install updates a couple of times.”

But it’s till doing it? A reboot every time it updates is a pain - should it do that?
Also I’ve noticed that it says ‘7 providers total, 6 running’ and when I open the tabs it says for Outlook ‘the provider is waiting for a subsystem to start’

Any thoughts, and does this mean my email isn’t being checked :o

First the easy one, terminate the outlook/exchange provider unless you are using MS Outlook (not express) or MS Exchange, it should have been disabled to start with if you don’t have MS Outlook. I suggest a browse of the avast help file.

Operating system restart needed by avast message - First check the contents of the C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\setup.log file, which should show you why it thinks the reboot is needed.
This may be solved, in some systems, by deleting the file C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\reboot.txt

Thanks, Tech, I wonder where my link went ;D

Thanks all, sorted

Which of the options was it that resolved the problem ?

Welcome to the forums.

Ah, sorry forgot to say :-[

I tried all 3 from what you gave me + the links, but only used 2.
Deleted the .txt file, ran the little program that changed the registry (didn’t fancy trying it myself) and then I tried the re-install/repair option - although that didn’t work, as repair didn’t come up as an option. So the first 2 did it

Thanks for the feedback.
