Hi, I have finally decided to break away from Norton and upgrade and install Avast Home addition on my home computers. Yesterday I downloaded and installed the “free” Home addition and I filled out the registration information and I am awaiting my email to complete the registration.
I have reviewed all of the options on the program and read everything that I can to find about how it works but I am left with a lot of questions about how Avast protects, updates, and scans the computer. Here is the main content of my questions. I know that with Norton that it would do sereval things automatically; 1.) Automatically update virus definitions, 2.) Automatically monitor emails, downloads, file sharing, etc and warn me of any viruses. 3.) Automatically deep scan my entire computer twice a week at 4:00am.
My question is, how does Avast work and what specific settings do I need to make, etc so that Avast will do all 3 of the above automatically?
I’ll thank you now for helping me out. I’m glad that I made the switch and sorry I didn’t do it sooner. Once I get the above answered I plan to get my whole family converted.

First things first. Make sure you have completely removed NAV using the uninstall util from Symantec. If you don’t do that, you can get conflicts.
1,2,3 Avast can do that also. (depends on the settings you set ofcourse)
For 3 however you need the Pro version or (if you have the Home version) use the tasksheduler in Windows.
(Info for the Home version)
Since you are new to Avast, I suggest you read the help and this board to get familiar with Avast and the settings/options it provides to the user and what they do.
hint: This board has a search option

A little more info:
1]
- Standard Avast checks for updates as soon as you connect to the internet.
- After that (if you stay connected) it checks for updates every 4 hours (this can be changed in avast4.ini)
2]
- e-mails are automaticly protected if you have a NT based OS and don’t have any specific changes made to the email. (eg: to get a spamfilter to work)
- Downloads are standard checked by the on-acces provider. (depends on your settings)
- File sharing can be checked (for most populair p2p applications) with the p2p provider(s)
3]
- As said in my previous post. The Pro version has a sheduler option build in.
- For the home version you need to use the tasksheduler.
(there has to be a difference between paid and free
)
