new user to Avast.

My computer installer installed Avast after my McAfee was being detected as something foreign and wouldn’t let me on the web.
Please excuse any mistakes I make here until I get used to this but I’m most interested in in keeping my system as safe as possible.
My question is at this time is whether I should set up my firewalls on my Windows site instead of McAfee since it has been turned off?
Thank you,
Leeflea

you can not have avast and McAfee installed at the same time, you must uninstall one

When and why a third-party antivirus software should be uninstalled?

Welcome to the avast forums Uninstall McAfee.

You Can have Program like Malware bytes or Super Antispyware Along with Avast!

Greetings,

Make sure that you have COMPLETELY removed all McAfee and any competing Anti-Virus products from your system before installing Avast through Add/Remove programs. If you have any trouble removing a competing product, a list of Program uninstallers is available here. Be sure to read the INFO about each uninstaller before using the product. Hopefully, a removal through Windows Control Panel should be sufficient, but if not, here is the list:

http://uninstallers.blogspot.com/

My recommendations (If you have a competing AV program on the computer)

1.) If you still have McAfee of anything, or Norton, AVG, Microsoft Security Essentials. Uninstall them through Add/Remove Programs. Use the Uninstall Tool for the program if you have any trouble with its removal.

  1. b. With the competing AV removed, get a fresh download of Avast from Avast’s site. www.avast.com and install it.
  2. c. Get your year-long license key from Avast by going to the Maintenance Tab in the GUI and filling out the registration form. (If you need to reinstall the program, you will need to repeat step 1. C.) You will also need to repeat step 1 C. each year to get a new license key. The key is free of charge, and you will be notified when it is time to renew about 10 days prior to renewal. When that happens, just re-follow the steps here in 1.C.

2. If you don’t have a Competing AV on the computer and have Avast already on the system.

Get your Avast license key if you haven’t already, and you should be able to turn on the Windows Firewall in the Security Settings.

I was a McAfee user for years because my broadband provider provided McAfee for free.

Even for free McAfee isn’t worth it.

I switched to Avast - AIS and it has worked great for me.

Disclaimer. I do not use Safe Zone, WebRep or the regular Sandbox feature.

Just my choice.

leeflea.

What do you mean by " Your computer installer " Is he a thecnician ? or Avast was installed by someone else ?

What " detected McAfee as something foreign " that you could not connect to the web and you have to install Avast ?

Now If McAfee is off, you should turn your Windows firewall back on. If using a NAT router make sure it is anable, see your router instructions.

If running Avast and still you can see McAfee icon in your traybar see this guide to get rid of it:

Hope it helps.

That is why you should not be giving advice.

SafeZone works Great and WebRep is working fine and I use the Sandbox feature all the time when needed.
From avast! HELP CENTER

Sandbox
The avast! Sandbox is a special security feature that allows you to browse the web, or manually run another application, in a completely safe environment, isolated from the rest of your system.

This is especially useful when visiting potentially infected websites, or if you suspect an application may be infected - you can run the program (or your web browser) inside the sandbox to determine whether or not it is safe, while remaining completely protected against any malicious actions that it may try to carry out.

I think Nesivos was just stating his experience and choice/preference for custom install there. No harm there. Same here also because I have Sandboxie(paid version)and Online Armor Premium/ComodoIS ver5.3(no AV)–in another desktop. Stating experience/choice/preference also.

@leeflea,

Hi I’m also new here and new AIS user. McAfee has an uninstall tool you should use that or AppRemover. Using the Add/Remove programs will not remove all remnants. I used McAfee on a new laptop but removed it and installed Avira Premium on it instead. I use AIS on my desktop.
