Greetings,
Make sure that you have COMPLETELY removed all McAfee and any competing Anti-Virus products from your system before installing Avast through Add/Remove programs. If you have any trouble removing a competing product, a list of Program uninstallers is available here. Be sure to read the INFO about each uninstaller before using the product. Hopefully, a removal through Windows Control Panel should be sufficient, but if not, here is the list:

My recommendations (If you have a competing AV program on the computer)
1.) If you still have McAfee of anything, or Norton, AVG, Microsoft Security Essentials. Uninstall them through Add/Remove Programs. Use the Uninstall Tool for the program if you have any trouble with its removal.
- b. With the competing AV removed, get a fresh download of Avast from Avast’s site. www.avast.com and install it.
- c. Get your year-long license key from Avast by going to the Maintenance Tab in the GUI and filling out the registration form. (If you need to reinstall the program, you will need to repeat step 1. C.) You will also need to repeat step 1 C. each year to get a new license key. The key is free of charge, and you will be notified when it is time to renew about 10 days prior to renewal. When that happens, just re-follow the steps here in 1.C.
2. If you don’t have a Competing AV on the computer and have Avast already on the system.
Get your Avast license key if you haven’t already, and you should be able to turn on the Windows Firewall in the Security Settings.
