What do you mean by " Your computer installer " Is he a thecnician ? or Avast was installed by someone else ?
What " detected McAfee as something foreign " that you could not connect to the web and you have to install Avast ?
Now If McAfee is off, you should turn your Windows firewall back on. If using a NAT router make sure it is anable, see your router instructions.
If running Avast and still you can see McAfee icon in your traybar see this guide to get rid of it:
