Hey just got the avast 4 home version am just looking for some general advice on how to use not very experienced with computers but just a general couple of steps on how to run the program would be great thanks

The default options are the optimized ones (generally).
You’re using a very configurable antivirus. If you want to change things, improve, fill your needs, you will need to learn a little by help files, ask your doubts in forums, searching the forums for specific features, etc.
It’s not a fast issue… avast! is VERY configurable.

A good place to start would be the avast help file (windows Start, Programs, avast! Antivirus, Help), for the most part the default settings are fine and provide a balance between performance and protection.
There are also a number of sticky threads (always at the top of the list) in the forums that provide a wealth of information to help get the best out of avast.
Whilst you question is a little too general to give any detailed advice, as in what do you mean by “just a general couple of steps on how to run the program ?”
Is there something specific you are trying to do, like run a scan ?
