WINDOWS 10 DID A FEATURE UPDATE FROM 1709 TO 1803. Starting Tuesday 5/08/18
Avast updated from 18.4.2333 to 18.4.2338 two days after Win 10 1803 Spring update.
I updated to Avast version 18.4.2338 after installing W 10-1803 on 3 PC’s…
Now I have over 100 error entries and gain up to 20 per day !

Problem
Unsuccessful application reconfiguration
Description
Windows Installer reconfigured the product. Product Name: Avast Update Helper. Product Version: 1.4.136.333. Product Language: 1033. Manufacturer: AVAST Software. Reconfiguration success or error status: 1603.
I also succeeded updating Avast to 18.4.2338 2 days later PRIOR TO installing W 10-1803 and those 5 PC’s had no problems.
On the 3 error 1603 PC’s I ran Avastclear.exe in safe mode to uninstall and then re-install with error 1603 still after fresh install of Avast. I ran uninstall from control panel and tried again from Win 10 Apps and features
Like I said Windows 10 1803 installed itself 2 days before Avast 18.4.2338 was available. All 3 have error 1603
I have not found a solution as of yet. No help from forum.
What I have done so far was to Recover an image that has Win 10-1709 and Avast version 18.4.2333
I will attempt to update Avast to 18.4.2338 while still in Win 10-1709.
I will watch for the dreaded :

I will update when this is solved.

See https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=219218.msg1463080#msg1463080, does this help.
None of those “advice” on doing anything with your AV (like disabling or even uninstalling) are supposed to be done/made. A software is supposed to be compatible with the system-every system. Such advice are just rubbish. I had a system crash on 3 PCs, all of which were caused by Avast. and I even checked whether it was Avast or something else. when I reinstalled win on every PC and attempted to upgrade from 1709 to 1803, I got the same BSOD and then to choose keyboard language and nothing else from there. After reinstalling win and installing Bitdefender, the update from 1709 to 1803 went cleanly and even faster than any previous installation of that sort. There is no reason for devs to suggest doing anything on our own end, but for them to fix the problem and to finally do something about the system load of this software. I’ve been using Avast for the past 8 yrs. I used paid as well as free services and I’ve always loved the AV, but it has become too heavy for the system and it burdens it unnecessarily with all the bloatware nobody needs or uses. Eight years is enough. In all those years, the company has managed only to add more bloatware and not tackle the mounting issues.
unfortunately, I’ve stoped using Avast bcs I’ve had enough of this behaviour. The fact that they have so many users does not mean they can do whatever they want and feel that 1 user is irrelevant compared to millions of others. When Avast fixes its compatibility issue with Win10, when they get rid of all the bloatware and decrease the startup time. Until then, my money will go to the competition.
What I am doing to fix is to Restore Image to version Windows 10-1709.
This version has AvastFree version 18.4.2333

I have had it.
I have done a complete uninstall using Revo Uninstaller Pro Portable on USB drive.Swept through the 650+ Registry entries as well.
I never got Avast to work correctly. It was showing that error still in Win 10-1709 it never installed the 1803 version.
Sorry, I really liked Avast.
i checked the Reliability Monitor today on another PC and it is showing the the same error.

Well maybe Avast Secure Browser is causing a driver to stop running momentarily. Temporary fix was to uninstall ASB but permanent fix was to upgrade the system graphics driver to the latest version.
Symptom was an intermittent flashing desktop as if explorer was crashing, but it was not that.
I’d look for a corrupted driver of some sort, especially since 1803 upgrade has been problematic for both avast and Windows.
If you still think it is Avast, try disabling Behavior Shield.
