New version notification

I get regular notifications from CNet about my free Avast version but I find the installation process really annoying. First, the old version has to be uninstalled so that the new one can then replace it. How can I keep my original settings and exclusions (not to mention banning that dreadful woman’s voiceover as I have to do each time)? Then it tells me it can’t check all the mail and I need to disable SST (or something similar). When I did that I didn’t get any mail at all so where do I go from here?

Avast works well but I wish it would download over the older version so that I didn’t have to go through it each time and didn’t cause me so many niggling problems.

Just invoke the updater through the program…

No need to run the setup.exe every time a new version comes out.

Avast is set to automatically update but when I receive the email notification of a new version I assume I have to download it. Are you telling me I’ve been doing this unnecessarily all this time?

I believe so…

If you’re using avast 5, you can just go to the update or maintenance page (can’t remember which one and I’m still stuck on 4.8 here at work).

On that page, there’s “update definitions” or “update program”.

All you need to do is click the update program button.

The Cnet notification would be useful just to know when there’s an update available, then invoke the update from within the program.

As for the “automatically update” you’re speaking of, I think that’s just for virus definition updates.

Thank you for explaining that. I understand now so in future I definitely won’t be uninstalling then reinstalling the programme!
Thanks again. Have a nice day. Me? I’m going out to eat!

No problem, and enjoy your meal.

One more thing: If you want avast to update its Program Version automatically, then go to Settings in the upper-right, then click on the “update” tab. Here you can specify whether the Program Version should be updated automatically. By the default, only the virus definitions are automatically updated.

Best regards

I already have the automatic update tabs checked but thank you just the same. I have now unsubscribed from the relevant email reminder on CNet as I had assumed it was connected with Avast. See what being, blonde, female and old does to you?

Meal didn’t live up to expectations but wasn’t bad. Brought home a great doggie back for my dog and 2 cats though!

thanks again.
