New version of Avast delays WinXP start (format/new hardware=no change)

Hey guys ever since the last update my winxp system hangs during boot. The delay is about 3-5minutes. The pause starts the moment Avast loads into the taskbar and feezes all computer fuctions except the mouse and display properties. Avast customer service wasn’t much help and searching the forums came up with a couple people like me but no fix. I just got new hardware and strangely after a comletely new WinXP install and installing avast first thing, it shows the same delayed start as I had with the previous system. It’s obviously NOT SOFTWARE related. The only things that stayed the same in my PC is a 250gb Sata drive, 200gb IDE drive, Pioneer DVDRW, ATI Radeon X300 and my cpu E6300. I don’t see how avast could be having a conflict with this hardware. Video card is the next to be replaced so we will see if that is the problem. Something I noticed is that windows alerts are affected when the new avast is running. For instance all windows alerts come though the pc speaker instead of my normal speakers, same goes for other sounds like windows exit. I have a suspicion it has something to do with the audio built into the motherboard. My previous mobo had a Realtek chip, so does my new one. Maybe there is a connection.

Anyway after my video card swap I’m out of ideas. New hardware and a clean WinXP install usually fixes all the problems. Strangely not in this case. I’ve used avast for ages, and prefer to continue using it but anyone else got some suggestions?

I have the similar situation twice. But PC frozen completely.

1 when I’ve add new user account at WIN XP PRO - avast symbol disappeared and after few minute frozen even keyboard magic 3keys not work, but mouse still moved.

2 second PC - new (reinstall from recovery cd) after update via Internet PC is frozen!

any comments?

One of the changes in the Last program update was to speed the loading of avast services to protect your system sooner. However, this update was some considerable time ago (program: 4.7.1001 - 30.4.2007), so I would have thought you would have seen this earlier. A VPS update wouldn’t have this impact.

On the avast! Program Settings (right click avast icon), Troubleshooting page - Check the option “Delay loading of avast! services after other system services” - does it help?
Though I’m not convinced this is the problem as you should have seen it from the end of April, early May.

This however, shouldn’t be having any effect on alerts and the speakers it is output on.

I suggest you start your own New Topic as there are significant differences which will only get this topic confused. Please also put on there, any previous AV installed, any other security applications, etc.

Also consider if even decreasing security you should disable dll scanning (last option of Standard Shield). Also consider reducing the startup programs. Also, check the Standard Shield sensitivity to Normal or Custom level, not the High.
