New Website Hangs my computer!!

I’ve used Avast & loved it for over 4 months now. My problem began with the updated program & website on the 13th. Everytime I close the Avast webpage & go to my desktop, my system hangs for 30-45 seconds. The start button depresses, then just hangs idly. This also happened when I was using AVG, their webpage & updates froze my computer. I use winME, IE6sp1. Is this a Java thing? My system is free of spyware. Please help.

Close your browser, delete all cookies, temporary files, temporary internet files, downloaded program files etc.

Reboot and try again. Does this solves it?

I’m sorry, I should have told you that I had done all of that before posting.

And with that, I should have tested for the hang, which now appears to have cleared itself. Thanks for the help. I will post back if this problem returns.

My victory was temporary. This website is again hanging my computer when I exit to the desktop. What could be different from the old webpage?

Try another browser. That will at least tell us if it is a browser related problem or not.

I installed Firefox & the hanging problem has disappeared. I’m not totally comfortable with Firefox though. Any suggestions on correcting the problem with Internet Explorer?

Try a repair of IE as explained HERE

Also make sure your IE is upto date

I have Windows ME, I’ve tried the repair feature in “add/remove programs” file. It will always bug me, but hey, I’m starting to like this Firefox. Seems more stable & lots faster.

You can remove IE with THIS util and than reinstall IE. It may solve the problem.

I have been using firefox for a while and, and i now don’t see how i used the internet without it, its faster and has more security!!, also you may want to go to tools>extensions>get more extensions, where there are some good optional add ons

Thanks for the suggestions, I think I’ll just stay with Firefox, probably do more harm than good deleting IE & reinstalling it.

Hello bearmstead

I’m glad that you like firefox. May I suggest you some very useful extensions ?

  • mouse gesture : navigate with mouse moves.
  • tabbrowser preferences : manage your windows in tab

After these “must have” you can add :

  • googlebar : the google bar for firefox
  • ieview : some sites require IE. With ieview you can launch IE on the current page in one click
  • tab X : add ‘X’ icon in tab title to close it easily

With all these I’m sure you will never return to IE

Enjoy !
