newbie alert

hey, i have only started using avast (home edition) since yesterday. i have some very basic issues. should i change my resident protection to high and whats the difference between the settings? will ‘high’ affect my system’s performance?
this morning i suddenly noticed that both the ‘avast’ and ‘vrdb’ icons just upped and disappeared from my system tray! if they are not there will my system still be protected? in the 1st place why did they disappear like that?
what are the advantages of registering with the website?
thanks.
i am running windows me behind a zonealarm firewall. i am connected to the internet via a 512 dsl connection.

um that still doesn’t explain why it does it in the first place… :-*

God works in mysterious ways ?

If its the first solution …i.e then it does tell you whats causing it.XP hides inactive system tray icons by default. If its not that and you already have hide incactive icons unticked then check in your task manager that avast is still active in background and hasnt been shut down by malware. Also do a search here at the forums for "disappearing icons"I use w98 so ull get more solutions with the search

Try RejZor’s AEC (Avast Externel Control to repair the tray icons.

And for the settings that is somehing you must decide. Read the manual an do a search on this board. Both will tell you a lot.

Help files describe very well the different behaviors of the protection level for each provider.

Most probably… Protection requires resources… You must choose what you need more (or when you need more)

Most probably you’re not protected.
You can use ‘Control’ application to restart avast or try to repair the installation through Control Panel > Add/Remove programs.

Not so easy to discover… Probably you had another antivirus installed in the past… or ZA blocked avast startup…

Without the registration you only will able to use the trial version for 60 days.
