Newbie Needs Help, I think I have a Virus

Thank you for this opportunity to ask for help.

My computer began misbehaving a month ago and I have always had Avast on. The screen would freeze in internet explorer while I was reading the online paper and then the screen would go black for a moment. As it flickered back on a message indicated that there was some issue with the display drivers and then all was well.

I immediately ran Avast virus scan and no issues were reported. The issue became more frequent and there was no longer the previous warning message but a new one on a blue screen saying Windows has recoverd from a fatal error or something like that. I ran Avast boot scan and it caught and deleted a Trojan virus.

The issues kept on coming and now I have problems even booting up. Sometimes it boots…sometimes it has several false starts before it boots and sometimes it just hangs. I restarted in safe mode and all seemed well so I thought that the start up drivers must be OK. I ran Avast boot scan and full scan and nothing was found.

Windows help prompted me to to a system restore which I tried even though I have not downloaded or installed any new programs. This seemed to work for a day or two and now my problems have returned.

I tried to read the posts but much of the language being used is currently beyond me as I am unfamiliar with ddl’s and all that stuff. I am a quick learner and I follow instructions well however so if anyone could be kind enough to spend a few moments suggesting what I might do, I will be ever so grateful.

Thanks again in advance for your assistance!
