Newbie Questions

I’ve just installed AVAST! 4.8 Home Edition…

The email scanner appears to be working OK except that I get a “Not-Tested” message in the ‘properties’ of inbound email… I’ve seen where people have been advised to check the log file but my question is: where is the log file located?

When performing a scan and want to move an ‘infected’ file to ‘the chest’, I get the message: “RPC Server too busy to complete this operation”… What exactly does this mean?

“Resident Protection” is shown as disabled… I’ve sent the sensitivity level but when I open the ‘simple user interface’ at a later time it’s ‘disabled’ again… What’s this about? ???

How does one create the “VRDB” (Virus Recovery Database)?

No ‘techno-speak’ please; clear and concise preferred…

Have (or did) you another AV installed in this system, if so what was it and how did you get rid of it ?

This is often a cause of the RPC error and could also have an impact on the email scanning or lack of it.

Hello David R…

I did have another AV installed… It was AVG… I uninstalled from Add/Remove Programs and then ran CCleaner to make sure all other remnants were gone…

CCleaner- nice try but no cigar

avg has a just released remover here
http://www.grisoft.com/ww.download-tools

want a second opinion
go here
http://www.pchell.com/virus/uninstallantivir.shtml
and start here on this line and finish the page including the registry cleaner- thanks for the tool antivir

What if Windows Security Center Shows AntiVir or other muliple Antivirus products installed

The email scanning seems to be solved… I’ve just downloaded email (Outlook Express) and the the properties in the message are showing:
X-Antivirus: avast! (VPS 080831-0, 08/31/2008), Inbound message
X-Antivirus-Status: Clean

‘wymrider’; I’ll check those things out… What have you got against CCleaner? I’ve never had any problems with it and it’s done what it says it will…

I have nothing…
Oh, if they could get rid of the Yahoo toolbar into their installer (and not only in the Slim version…) it will be good

Tech,

re CCleaner - I have (I think) both the Full and USB versions and I always opt out of installing the Yahoo toolbar when I update them.

My regards

Yes, you have. What I want is even having to download the extra bytes

I have nothing against CCleaner
Great tool, use it all the time
It will not help clean up AVG however

please let me know if the antivir tool finds anything the AVG remover missed
remember not to tick any avast lines when using the regcleaner

If it turns out that avg was squatted on a key that avast needed you might have to refresh avast (or whatever its called)

It appears that the only issue I have left to deal with is that of the “RPC Server…”

All other issues have been resolved…

I am not familiar with avast so I don’t know what it is using RPC for, but RPC is a communication protocol. It is used to communicate either across systems or across processes. So my guess (this is a total guess) is that avast is unable to communicate within your system with another part of itself. Another possibility might be that avast is trying to download virus updates and is using RPC to communicate from your system to the avast web site for updates.

I do know that Remote Procedure Call (RPC) has to be Started because it is a fundamental communication vehicle between applications:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa373935.aspx

RPC is a basic Windows service, without it, even Windows won’t run.
avast, as well a lot of other programs, needs RPC.

I’m gonna put this to bed since all the issues appear to have been resolved… ;D

Thanks to all! 8)

Well, glad you’ve solved it, but we don’t like mysteries… Do you know how did you fix it? ???

Really no mysteries involved Tech… ;D

Seems that Avast! likes to have a reboot with a lot of things that the user changes or sets up and that seems to be the case with the problems that I’d encountered… :stuck_out_tongue:

If I’d have followed my own advise, RTFM (Read the Freakin’ Manual), I’ve have known this before posting… 8)

Now let’s see if I can help a friend of mine who has also just moved over from AVG solve the problem of the two blue icons missing from his system tray… ???

  1. Check the option in the Appearance tab of settings.
    or
  2. Repair your avast installation through Control Panel.
    or
  3. Make a link to ashdisp.exe in your startup folder
    or
  4. Add the path to ashDisp.exe into a value named avast! in the Windows Registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
    See picture here: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=26155.msg213891#msg213891

If that does not help, please, uninstall, boot, install again, boot.

What other security based software do you have that might block new startup entries, e.g. Spybot S&D (TeaTimer), AdAware (AdWatch), SpySweeper, Spyware Doctor (StartUpGuard), PrevX, WinPatrol, ProcessGuard, etc.?
