:'(I just down loaded avast 4.5. It seemed to do that fine. I can bring it up but when I try to scan I get this message:
The file name or directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect.
Scan completed witherrors.
123= then it also repeats above message.
even though I have tried it repeatedly I always have it showing I never scanned. And the errors stuff repeats.
What do I do to fix this?

What OS?
How do you scan?
With what settings?
With what files (and locations) do you get this error?
Could it be this error message?
42123 AVAST_PACK_MIME_CORRUPTED
Can you try to repair your installation?
Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove
Then choose Repair function in the popup window (Repair).
If this does not help, can you uninstall / boot / download a new setup file / install / boot again?

For some strange reason I could not log on with 1st name I registered with, but any hows…
I read about doing the repair thing so did it. Then I could scan. It goes through it for some time then tells me that a whole list of items can’t be scanned.
running windows 98 sec edtion
dell machine. deminsion t500
pentium 3 512.0mb
should I uninstall the whole thing and re install or is there a something else I can do?
It just finished again and says there is 36 items that couldn’t be scanned. One on the list is spybot related. Is this part of the trouble?
I am not great at understanding computer jargon on that page so don’t really understand the meaning of each item. I don’t know how to copy them all easy to show you either. Please help! Thanks

There may be many valid reasons why files aren’t scanned, password protected (and avast doesn’t know/have the password), etc.
Let us know the reason why they weren’t scanned and the path to the file that wasn’t scanned. You don’t have to list everything, just the common reasons and paths.
