Run avast!
Go to Menu
Click “Settings”
Remove “checkmark” or “X” on the “Enable SKin for user interface”
Reboot avast by closing and opening avast! again.
Ugly is relative term… what is ugly to you, it’s maybe beautiful to others…
Anti-virus must have an interface as the others.
No, it must not have interface looking like other antiviruses. That makes avast! different and even better than other antivirus tools. I also think that antivirus efficiency to protect your system from malicious software is more important than it’s look…

What is your definition of a proper interface?
avast! does have a (proper functioning) GUI interface, not to mention you can change or switch off the skins. There is far more choices than any other AV out there that I have seen/used other than take it or leave it (no choice).
My mother used to say to me:
