i’ve searched and here’s what i’ve tried:
Internet Mail provider, Customize…, Heuristics set the slider to Custom, click Customize… and look for the Attachment checks and untick the first one, the second will probably be ok try it and see, you can always untick it later if need be.
AND
i’ve gone into Internet Mail > Redirect and added 70.86.176.98 to the ignore list…
newsleecher will not connect…
The first option you mention shouldn’t make any difference as this I don’t believe is the problem.
The workaround is the option “Use alt. supersearch port” in NewsLeecher options, this is probably the best option as avast won’t be monitoring the alternative port. Either that or if your only use of the news port is for newsleacher then you could probably disable scanning (inbound news, etc) on the Internet Mail provider’s NNTP tab.
OR to put the address 70.86.176.98 to the Internet Mail’s ignored addresses. Which you tried but I can’t understand why this didn’t work, unless the IP has changed.
Have you tried editing the Newsleacher options, “Use alt. supersearch port” or presumably it would still be using the regular port and the Internet Mail provider is expecting NNTP protocol which the super search isn’t using so it effectively fails.
What errors are you getting when newsleacher won’t connect ?
i have not tried the alt. supersearch in the options…i may give that a try…

the ip, is that for ssgen? if so, then i think it has changed…
I honestly don’t know what that IP is for, though a whois finds this:

But the switch to the alt suppersearch port in newsleacher, is probably the best option.
i’ll give the alt. supersearch option a try (other than reading about it in here, didn’t know anything about it ;D).
as far as the ssgen is concerned, i looked in my log for newsleecher and found the ip listed for ssgen…if i add that to the exclusions list in avast, everything works fine…strange…
Not surprising, most people only find out about other options/settings, if they are trying to figure out why something isn’t working.
Not strange, I’m not to surprised as IPs can change and the old one could have changed (if they change hots/servers, etc.), so avast would be excluding an IP that isn’t being used, so it wouldn’t be doing the job of exclusion
What is the IP for ssgen, if that is working (in the exclusion) then it may help others in the future (who searched like you did) ?
Remember you only need to take one of the options, either add the IP address to the ignored addresses, if that works OR swap to the alt supersearch port in newsleacher not both.
oops, meant to put it in my previous post…according to my newsleecher log ssgen IP is 174.37.197.132, and i put this in the Internet Mail > Custom > Redirect > Exclude and everything appeared to work…

ok, i’ve updated to avast 5.0.396 and cannot connect again…looking to add the IP like i did above but can’t seem to find where to enter the settings…where do i enter the IP to connect to newsleecher?
no one? 
one more bump then i’ll try starting another thread…
For avast 5.0 all I can find is the Settings, Troubleshooting, scroll down to Mail, Ignored addresses and try entering the IP address there.
