Hi malware fighters,
Next year malcreants will target Virtual Machines, this being predicted by filter maker MessageLabs. The closing down of several major botnets, would be the reason why “virtual malware” is flourishing. “The OS isn’t aware it is there, and the malware will intercept OS’s low-level calls”, according to analyst Paul Wood. According to Wood the problem with virtual malware is that you understand it exists and know how cleanse it. “Because it is that low-level, sometimes the only option left is a reformat of the infected machine.”
Mark O’Dell notices that theoretically the threat of virtual malware has been around since hypervisor technology had been created and that this kind of malware is very hard to detect. The filter maker predicts also that malware will be more versatile. A spambot that finds that it is no longer spamming, can turn itself into a Ddos attacker. Smart phone owners will also be effected, because cybercriminals try to start up “mobile botnets”.
