Nice Pentecost weekend to all that observe it...

Here in the Netherlands we have the Pentecost weekend off (coming Sunday and Monday).
Some Protestant nations observe these days, so also the north of my country, the Netherlands.

The Saterday before Pentecost was called “Luilak” Saturday, but I think they only observe that folklore morning
now in and around Amsterdam and Gouda.

As those that slept in long on that particular Saterday morning were woken up early with a lot of noise from pots and pans.
(luilak (Dutch) means “lazy bones”).

Hi DavidR,

All countries have their particular festivities. Remember there were/are certain occasions to start a bonfire,
and in Scotland where Hogmanay bonfires continue to be lit in various Caledonian cities until to-day.

I personally remember we had one near the river Tay. 8)

Well Hogmanay is a celebration of the new year, a party where faith has no bearing (any excuse for a few bevies).

Bonfire night 5th November celebrating Guy Fawkes (or Guido Fawkes) and his failed gunpowder plot to blow up Parliament.
