I am running avast free home…so long all looked OK.
Being a reader of German review PC-Welt, I recently was directed to download the NIR-Soft suite
which includes numerous small tools for computing.
PC-Welt says that some are seen als false positves by Virus-scans.
Indeed there are MANY of these files detected by Avast 8.0.1483, ending up in Virus container.
Upon detection I tried to introduce them as accepted file to Avast,
------ however Avast not accepted this.
From container I placed them back to their folder,
------ however calling this file - again put it in virus container.
Then I have been trying to send this file to support,
------ however Avast did not find this file for transmitting to support.
WHAT IS WRONG WITH AVAST ?
Hans
report it here http://www.avast.com/en-no/contact-form.php change subject to suite your case
please see my idea of PUP (potencially unwanted programs) related exclusions here
http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=109537.msg902246#msg902246
and support it
p.s. PC-welt totally failed to mention if these Nirsoft tools detected by Avast! are PUP detections …
this is the message which was sent to “Avast! Contact us” :
I am a reader of German PC-Welt and followed their proposal to download and install the nirsoft_package_1.17.22. zip.
This package contains about 100 small tools for computing.
PC-Welt says : “Dieser Download ist virengeprüft.” and “Achtung: Die Antiviren-Programme Antivir und TrendMicro melden bei der Installation von NirLauncher einen Fund.”
However Free Avast 8.1483 detects a lot of false positivs and puts these files in quarantaine.
My Avast not allows me to put these files on the white list.
I had to deactivate Avast for installation of nirsoft package.
After reactivation of Avast and trying to open one and more Nirsoft programms there come continuous detections of false positives which end up in the container.
Impossible to put them on a white-list.
A few of these false positive files have been uploaded to Avast support.
The present message gives the Website for download of the complete NIRsoft package.
Also the zipped Nirsoft-package is/should be included in the present message.
Please take all necessary measures to allow installation and use of this package without problems.
thanks
Hans
n.b. this is the download site :

I have been trying to upload the nirsoft package which is about 16 MB but your server disconnects befor end of upload.
So there is just one file uploaded of about 100 in that package.
Not false positives. They are detected as PUPs as they can be potentially risky for some users. Just disable PUP detection or exclude the detected files from being scanned by Avast.
please read this (found in wikipedia) :
A PUP (potentially unwanted program) is a program that may be unwanted, despite the possibility that users consented to download it. PUPs include spyware, adware, and dialers, and are often downloaded in conjunction with a program that the user wants.
The term was created by McAfee, the Internet Security company, because marketing firms objected to having their products called “spyware”: in the view of such firms, all the information necessary for informed consent is included in the download agreement. It is widely recognized, however, that many if not most users fail to read a download agreement in sufficient detail to understand exactly what they are downloading.
McAfee differentiates PUPs from other types of malware, such as viruses, Trojans, and worms, which can be safely assumed to be unwanted by the user.
Malware, short for malicious (or malevolent) software, is software used or created by attackers to disrupt computer operation, gather sensitive information, or gain access to private computer systems
my QUESTION is : can NIR software be defamed as PUP ?
I believe it is not.
please read also this :

It doesn’t work. I’ve deactivated PUP and the download is blocked again.
Suggestions to report false positives (the proper way) are not idle. Avast does act on them.
And before someone chimes in and tries to make a distinction, the categorization of a program as a “PUP” could be false as well.
