NIS Norton Internet Security with avast

I recently loaded Mozilla Thunderbird and Firefox on my new office PC running Windows XP. My computer has been running Norton Internet Security 2005 successfully. My concern is that there are known issues with NAVCE, Corporate Edition deleting the entire Firefox Inbox during a system virus scan. While it may not be a problem with Norton Internet Security (non CE edition), I don’t care to take any chances. Hence, I’m considering switching to Avast!

I’ve reviewed many of the posts concerning Norton conflict issues and the need to completely uninstall NAV. Must I also remove Norton Internet Security and switch to a different firewall?

Thanks
Mark

Mark, if you really uninstall correctly NAV, it’s not necessary to uninstall NIS too. Even SystemWorks works with avast! without conflicts.
I suggest both Control Panel and the specific uninstall tool of Symantec 8)
Welcome

You may need to uninstall NIS and do a custom install excluding the AV element, if you cant uninstall its AV component in NIS.

  1. It is never wise to use the inbox as general storage as this is the file most likely to be corrupted/lost/deleted, because it is the on that is usually open at a crash, etc. When I receive emails they are generally filtered into more appropriate folders, newsletters, personal, etc. I have a 1-pending (to keep it alphabetically higher up) so anything left goes in there until actioned and placed in a more appropriate folder. That way if you lose your inbox little or no damage is done.

Many AVs are unable to extract a file from within a database file (like thunderbirds inbox or email folders) and not corrupt it, that is why they delete the complete inbox database file.

Fortunately avast! is able to scan incoming emails before they go to the inbox and can delete infected emails and they don’t get into the inbox.

avast! would have the same problem as other AVs if a virus was to be found in an old email in one of the thunderbird email folders during an on-demand scan (one you initiate, scan local disks), so care should be taken not to delete them if detected. Try to make a not of the email and delete it manually in the email folder and clear your deleted emails folder to get rid of it completely.
