No access to Internet and emails

I have just installed Avast Pro and my internet explorer and Outlook Express has stopped working.

If I disable the Webshield running then my internet works.

If I disable the Internet Mail then my outlook express works.

However disabling both to get things working seems to defeat the object of having Avast.

Please help.

Andy

Your firewall is blocking them.

What is your firewall ?
Does it allow ashWebSv.exe and ashMaiSv.exe internet access ?

  • If it does delete the entry for it and check your email and reconnect to browse the internet, this will force the firewall to ask permission again.

Into the firewall settings, the following programs should be allowed to connect:

C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashWebSv.exe (avast! Web Scanner)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashMaiSv.exe (avast! e-Mail Scanner Service)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\avast.setup (avast! Update executable). This is a temporary file that just appears when an update (check) is about to launch, and disappears again afterwards.

Don’t need rights to connect:
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashServ.exe (avast! antivirus service)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\aswUpdSv.exe (avast! Update Service)

Thanks to both replies.

I have changed the windows firewall to allow connections to ashWebSv and ashMaiSv but no luck. Still not letting me connect to Internet or access emails.

Windows firewall shouldn’t block the avast components as it does not block outbound connections.
Did you use any other antivirus or firewall in the past?

I have had Norton in the past but cannot uninstall it. I think this may be the problem

Yes it is.

  1. Remove NAV through Add/Remove programs from Control Panel. Boot.
  2. Use Norton Removal Tool for Windows 2000/XP/Vista.
  3. Boot.
  4. Install avast! Boot.
  5. See what you get.

    c) On the Windows desktop, double-click the SYMMSICLEANUP icon.
Click Run, and then click Yes.
    Click OK.

  3. Boot.

I have just downloaded the Norton removal tool; removed all remnants of the product and everything now works with the Avast fully on.

Many thanks for your brilliant and speedy response.

Take care.

Andy
